Amazon EventBridge Explained Simply: Connecting Applications Through Events

Amazon EventBridge is a serverless event bus service from AWS. It allows applications and AWS services to communicate using events without requiring direct connections between producers and consumers. This makes it especially useful for event-driven architectures.

What Is an Event Bus?

An event bus receives events and routes them to the right destinations.
A simple flow looks like this:
Producer → EventBridge → Consumer
The producer sends an event.
EventBridge evaluates routing rules and forwards the event to one or more targets.
Those targets can include:
  • AWS Lambda
  • Amazon SQS
  • Amazon SNS
  • Step Functions
  • other AWS services

Why Is This Useful?

Imagine an e-commerce system where an order is created.
Instead of the Order Service calling several other services directly, it can publish an event:
ORDER_CREATED
EventBridge can then route that event to different consumers.
For example:
Order Service
↓
EventBridge
↓
Billing
Inventory
Analytics
Notifications
Each system reacts independently.
This reduces coupling between services.

EventBridge Rules

Rules define which events should be sent to which targets.
For example, a rule could match events where:
source = order-service
and
detail-type = OrderCreated
Only matching events are routed to the configured target.
This allows systems to react only to the events they care about.

EventBridge vs SNS

SNS and EventBridge can both distribute events, but they are designed for slightly different use cases.
SNS is very effective for straightforward pub/sub messaging.
EventBridge provides more advanced event routing and filtering.
A simple way to think about them is:
SNS = publish messages to subscribers
EventBridge = route events based on rules

EventBridge vs SQS

SQS stores messages in a queue until a consumer processes them.
EventBridge focuses on routing events.
They are often used together.
For example:
Application → EventBridge → SQS → Worker
EventBridge decides where the event should go.
SQS stores the message until the consumer is ready.

AWS Service Integration

One of the main advantages of EventBridge is its integration with many AWS services.
AWS services can produce events that EventBridge can capture and route automatically.
This is useful for:
  • automation
  • monitoring
  • security workflows
  • asynchronous processing
  • integration between services

Key Takeaway

Amazon EventBridge is a powerful tool for connecting systems through events.
A simple way to remember it is:
Event happens → EventBridge evaluates rules → the right consumers receive it
Together with SQS, SNS, and Lambda, EventBridge is one of the main building blocks for scalable and loosely coupled event-driven architectures in AWS.
