3 AWS Services That Helped Me Understand the Cloud
A quick breakdown of three AWS services that helped me better understand the basics of cloud computing: EC2, S3, and IAM.
As I’ve been learning more about AWS and cloud computing, I noticed that trying to understand every service at once can get overwhelming.
What has helped me is focusing on a few core services first and understanding what they actually do.
Amazon EC2
Amazon EC2 is basically a virtual computer running in AWS.
It can be used to run applications, host websites, and work with servers.
The easiest way I remember it:
EC2 = a computer in the cloud.
Amazon S3
Amazon S3 is used to store files and data.
This can include images, documents, backups, logs, and application files.
The simple way I remember it:
S3 = storage in the cloud.
AWS IAM
IAM controls who or what can access AWS resources.
This is where users, roles, groups, and policies come into play.
One important concept I’ve learned is least privilege, which means only giving someone the permissions they actually need.
Putting It Together
A simple application could use:
- EC2 to run the application
- S3 to store files
- IAM to control access
Learning AWS this way has helped me focus less on memorizing service names and more on understanding how they actually work together.
As I continue learning AWS, my goal is to keep building small labs and learning through hands-on experience.
