How to avoid surprise AWS charges as a student

When I opened my first AWS account, my biggest worry wasn't learning the services, it was getting a bill I didn't expect. The good news is that AWS has free tools to warn you before that happens. Here's the setup I use, and it takes about five minutes.

1. Create a zero-spend budget
  1. Open the console and search for Billing and Cost Management.
  2. Go to Budgets → Create budget.
  3. Choose Use a template and select Zero spend budget.
  4. Enter your email and click Create budget.
Now you'll get an email as soon as your account spends even one cent.
2. Add a monthly limit (optional)
If you plan to use paid services for a project, create a second budget with the Monthly cost budget template and set a small amount, like $5. You'll be notified when you approach it.
3. Turn on Free Tier alerts
In Billing preferences, enable Receive AWS Free Tier alerts. AWS will email you when you're close to the Free Tier limits of a service.
4. Clean up after every lab
Most unexpected charges come from resources left running: EC2 instances, NAT gateways, databases, or Elastic IPs. When you finish a tutorial, delete what you created. Checking Cost Explorer once a week helps you catch anything you missed.
Final thoughts
These steps don't limit what you can learn; they just remove the fear of experimenting. Set them up once and focus on building.
