Amazon S3 looks simple: create a bucket, upload your files, and retrieve them when needed.
But in production, storage is only half the problem. Security is the other half.
A misconfigured S3 bucket can turn a perfectly secure application into a potential data-leak risk.
Here are 5 things worth checking before you put important data into S3.

1. Public Access

Ask yourself:
Does this bucket really need to be public?
For most application data, the answer is no.
Keep Block Public Access enabled unless you have a specific reason to expose objects publicly.

2. IAM Permissions

Avoid giving users or applications more permissions than they need.
Instead of:
S3:*
prefer permissions limited to the specific actions and resources required.
Least privilege > convenience.

3. Encryption

Sensitive data should be encrypted at rest.
S3 supports server-side encryption, allowing you to protect stored objects without implementing encryption logic inside your application.

4. Logging & Monitoring

Security isn't just about preventing a problem.
You also need to know when something unusual happens.
AWS logging and monitoring services can help you identify unexpected access and investigate suspicious activity.

5. Versioning

Accidental deletion happens.
Versioning can help you recover previous versions of objects instead of permanently losing them.

The bigger lesson

S3 is incredibly easy to start using.
That's exactly why it's easy to underestimate.
A production-ready S3 setup isn't simply:
Create bucket → Upload file
It's:
Create → Restrict → Encrypt → Monitor → Recover
The cloud gives you powerful infrastructure.
But configuration is still your responsibility.
☁️ Build fast.
🔐 Configure carefully.
🚀 Secure what you ship.
