Guardrails in AWS
AWS Guardrails are security and governance controls used to keep cloud resources, applications, and users within defined rules. They help organizations use AWS safely while reducing the risk of security problems, unauthorized access, and accidental changes.
Guardrails can be used to control what users and applications are allowed to do in an AWS environment. For example, an organization can create rules that prevent users from deleting important resources, restrict access to certain AWS services, or ensure that resources are created only in approved regions.
One important AWS service for implementing governance guardrails is AWS Control Tower. It provides preventive and detective controls that help organizations manage multiple AWS accounts according to their security and compliance requirements.
AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) also supports guardrails by controlling who can access AWS resources and what actions they can perform. Policies can be used to grant only the permissions that users or applications actually need.
Guardrails can generally be divided into two types:
Preventive guardrails: Stop an unwanted action before it happens.
Detective guardrails: Detect and report actions or configurations that violate organizational rules.
For example, a company may use a preventive guardrail to prevent the creation of resources in an unauthorized AWS Region. A detective guardrail could identify resources that do not meet the company's security requirements.
Guardrails are especially useful in large organizations where many teams and AWS accounts are being managed. They provide a consistent way to enforce security, compliance, and operational standards without manually checking every resource.
Conclusion
AWS Guardrails help organizations maintain a secure, controlled, and compliant cloud environment. By using preventive and detective controls, companies can reduce risks while still allowing teams to use AWS services efficiently.
