Amazon EC2 Explained for Beginners: Understanding Virtual Servers in the Cloud

Learn how Amazon EC2 provides virtual servers in the AWS Cloud and how beginners can use EC2 to deploy applications, websites, and projects.

Amazon EC2 Explained for Beginner
When I started learning AWS, Amazon EC2 was one of the first services I explored.
Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) provides virtual servers in the AWS Cloud. Instead of buying and maintaining a physical server, we can launch an EC2 instance and use it to run applications, websites, APIs, and other workloads.
How EC2 Works
When launching an EC2 instance, we can choose:
AMI – Operating system and software configuration
Instance Type – CPU and memory resources
Storage – Disk space for our applications and data
Security Group – Controls incoming and outgoing traffic
Key Pair – Used for secure access to the instance
For example, we can launch a Linux EC2 instance, connect through SSH, install Apache, and host a simple website.
Why EC2 is Useful
EC2 is useful for students because it provides hands-on experience with:
Cloud computing
Linux and servers
Networking
Security
Application deployment
It also helps us understand how real-world applications can run on cloud infrastructure.
Cost Awareness
While practicing with EC2, it is important to monitor usage and stop or terminate resources when they are no longer needed to avoid unexpected charges.
Conclusion
Amazon EC2 is a great starting point for understanding cloud computing. By launching and managing a simple EC2 instance, we can learn how cloud servers work and gain practical AWS experience.
