AWS Transit Gateway Explained: Simplifying Multi-VPC and Hybrid Network Connectivity
As AWS environments grow, organizations often create multiple VPCs for different applications, teams, environments, and accounts. Connecting these VPCs individually can quickly become difficult to manage.
AWS Transit Gateway (TGW) provides a centralized solution by acting as a network hub that connects multiple VPCs and on-premises networks through a single gateway.
Instead of creating many VPC-to-VPC connections, you can connect your networks to Transit Gateway and control traffic centrally.
What is AWS Transit Gateway?
AWS Transit Gateway is a managed service that works as a central router for your AWS network.
It can connect:
Multiple VPCs
AWS accounts
VPN connections
AWS Direct Connect
Hybrid networks
A simple architecture looks like this:
┌──────────────┐
│ VPC 1 │
│ Production │
└──────┬───────┘
│
│
┌──────▼───────┐
│ Transit │
│ Gateway │
│ (TGW) │
└──┬────┬───┬──┘
│ │ │
┌────────┘ │ └────────┐
│ │ │
┌─────▼─────┐ ┌─────▼─────┐ ┌────▼──────┐
│ VPC 2 │ │ VPC 3 │ │ On-Prem │
│ Development│ │ Testing │ │ Network │
└───────────┘ └───────────┘ └───────────┘
Why do we need Transit Gateway?
Imagine an organization has 10 VPCs.
Without a centralized architecture, you may need to create and maintain multiple VPC peering connections.
As the number of VPCs increases, the network becomes harder to manage.
With Transit Gateway:
VPC 1 ──┐
VPC 2 ──┤
VPC 3 ──┤
VPC 4 ──┼──> Transit Gateway
VPC 5 ──┤
VPC 6 ──┘
Each VPC connects to the Transit Gateway instead of creating individual connections between every VPC.
This provides a more scalable network architecture.
How Transit Gateway Works
The main components are:
1. Transit Gateway
The Transit Gateway is the central networking hub.
It receives network traffic from connected networks and uses routing information to determine where the traffic should go.
2. Transit Gateway Attachments
Networks connect to the Transit Gateway through attachments.
Common attachment types include:
VPC attachments
VPN attachments
Direct Connect Gateway
Transit Gateway Connect
Peering attachments
3. Transit Gateway Route Tables
Transit Gateway uses route tables to determine where traffic should be forwarded.
For example:
Destination Target
10.1.0.0/16 VPC-Production
10.2.0.0/16 VPC-Development
10.3.0.0/16 VPC-Testing
192.168.0.0/16 VPN
This allows administrators to control which networks can communicate with each other.
Example: Connecting Three VPCs
Suppose an organization has:
Production VPC
10.1.0.0/16
Development VPC
10.2.0.0/16
Testing VPC
10.3.0.0/16
All three VPCs are connected to Transit Gateway.
The Transit Gateway route table can contain:
10.1.0.0/16 → Production VPC
10.2.0.0/16 → Development VPC
10.3.0.0/16 → Testing VPC
Now traffic can be routed between the required networks without creating separate VPC peering connections.
Transit Gateway vs VPC Peering
Feature Transit Gateway VPC Peering
Architecture Centralized hub Point-to-point
Multiple VPCs Excellent Becomes complex
Central routing Yes Limited
Hybrid connectivity Yes Not designed for this
Scalability High Better for smaller/simple setups
Management Centralized Multiple connections
For a small environment with only two VPCs, VPC Peering may be sufficient.
For large multi-VPC or multi-account environments, Transit Gateway can provide a much cleaner architecture.
Transit Gateway with On-Premises Networks
Transit Gateway is also useful for hybrid cloud architectures.
For example:
AWS Cloud
│
┌───────▼───────┐
│ Transit Gateway│
└───────┬───────┘
│
VPN / Direct Connect
│
┌───────▼───────┐
│ On-Premises │
│ Data Center │
└───────────────┘
This allows AWS VPCs to communicate with resources in an organization's on-premises data center.
Important Best Practices
1. Plan CIDR ranges carefully
Avoid overlapping CIDR blocks between VPCs and on-premises networks.
For example:
VPC 1 → 10.1.0.0/16
VPC 2 → 10.2.0.0/16
VPC 3 → 10.3.0.0/16
2. Use separate Transit Gateway route tables
Different environments may require different communication policies.
For example:
Production
↓
Production TGW Route Table
Development
↓
Development TGW Route Table
This can help isolate environments.
3. Follow least-privilege networking
Not every VPC needs to communicate with every other VPC.
Only advertise and allow the routes that are actually required.
4. Monitor network traffic
Use AWS monitoring and logging capabilities to understand traffic flows and troubleshoot connectivity problems.
Real-World Use Case
Consider an organization running an application with separate environments:
Transit Gateway
│
┌───────────────┼───────────────┐
│ │ │
Production Development Security
│ │ │
VPC 1 VPC 2 VPC 3
│
Database
The organization can centrally manage connectivity while keeping environments logically separated.
This architecture becomes especially useful when multiple AWS accounts and VPCs are involved.
Conclusion
AWS Transit Gateway simplifies network connectivity by providing a centralized hub for connecting VPCs, VPNs, Direct Connect, and other networks.
Instead of managing many individual network connections, organizations can build a scalable hub-and-spoke architecture.
The key idea is simple:
> Connect your networks to Transit Gateway and manage routing centrally.
For organizations building multi-VPC or hybrid AWS environments, Transit Gateway is an important service to understand.
