5 AWS Services I Use as a Beginner Cloud Intern, Explained Simply

A fresher's plain-language guide to EC2, S3, IAM, CloudWatch and VPC, with what each one actually does and how I've used them so far.

When I started my AWS Cloud Internship, I knew the names of a lot of services but not what they really did. Docs felt heavy. So here is how I understand the five services I use most, in simple words.

1. EC2 (a computer in the cloud)

EC2 is a virtual server you rent. You pick the size, the operating system, and it runs your app.
Where I used it: [e.g. launched an instance to host / test ...]
Beginner tip: Stop or terminate instances when you're done practicing. Running ones keep costing money.

2. S3 (storage for files)

S3 stores files like images, logs, backups, and website files. Think of it as a folder that never fills up.
Where I used it: [e.g. stored ... in a bucket]
Beginner tip: Buckets are private by default. Keep them that way unless you really need public access.

3. IAM (who is allowed to do what)

IAM controls access. You create users and roles and give them only the permissions they need.
Where I used it: [e.g. created a role so an EC2 instance could read from S3]
Beginner tip: Don't use the root account for daily work. Create an IAM user instead.

4. CloudWatch (is my stuff okay?)

CloudWatch collects logs and metrics and can send alarms when something goes wrong, like CPU going too high.
Where I used it: [e.g. checked logs to find why ... failed]
Beginner tip: Set up one alarm early. It teaches you a lot about how your app behaves.

5. VPC (your private network)

A VPC is your own network inside AWS. It decides what can talk to what, and what is reachable from the internet. This one confused me the most at first. [Add one line about what finally made it click.]
Beginner tip: Learn subnets and security groups first. The rest makes more sense after.

What I learned

  • Most things connect to each other. EC2 + IAM + S3 shows up everywhere.
  • Breaking things in a practice account is the fastest way to learn.
  • [One real lesson from your internship.]

What's next for me

I'm going deeper into [Terraform / Kubernetes / monitoring] next and will write about it here.
If you're also a beginner, tell me which service confused you most.
