From Web Development to the Cloud: My Beginner’s Journey with AWS
As a Computer Science student and aspiring web developer, I have been learning how websites and applications are built using frontend and backend technologies. But while working on web development projects, I realized that building an application is only one part of the journey. Deploying, storing data, managing servers, securing applications, and making them available to users are equally important.
This is where cloud computing becomes an important skill for developers.
I recently started exploring Amazon Web Services (AWS) to understand how cloud technologies can complement my web development skills.
☁️ Why AWS?
AWS provides a wide range of cloud services that developers can use to build and deploy applications without having to manage all the underlying infrastructure themselves.
For a web developer, some particularly useful AWS services include:
Amazon EC2 – Running applications on virtual servers
Amazon S3 – Storing files and static website content
Amazon RDS – Working with relational databases
AWS Lambda – Running code without managing servers
Amazon API Gateway – Creating and managing APIs
AWS IAM – Managing access and permissions
Understanding these services can help developers move from simply creating projects locally to deploying applications in a real cloud environment.
💻 Connecting Web Development with AWS
A typical web application may have three major parts:
Frontend → Backend → Database
AWS provides services that can support each part of this architecture.
For example, a frontend application can use Amazon S3 for hosting static content, while backend functionality can run on Amazon EC2 or AWS Lambda. Data can be stored using services such as Amazon RDS.
This makes AWS especially interesting for developers who want to understand how real-world applications are deployed.
🛠️ Learning AWS Cloud9
One of the AWS developer tools I am exploring is AWS Cloud9.
AWS Cloud9 provides a cloud-based development environment where developers can write, run, and debug code. It is useful for understanding how development workflows can work directly in a cloud environment.
For someone beginning their cloud journey, experimenting with a simple project in a cloud-based development environment can be a great way to connect programming concepts with cloud technologies.
🚀 My Learning Goal
My goal is not just to learn individual AWS services, but to understand how they work together to build complete applications.
I want to gradually learn:
Cloud fundamentals
AWS core services
Deploying web applications
Backend and API development
Database integration
Security and IAM
Basic DevOps and CI/CD
AWS services for AI and Machine Learning
I believe that combining web development + backend development + cloud computing can give developers a much broader understanding of modern software development.
