AWS Fundamentals

Cloud computing from The AWS view

Cloud Computing and AWS

These are my notes on the fundamentals of cloud computing and AWS as I begin my journey into learning AWS.

Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is the delivery of computing resources and services over the internet using a pay-as-you-go pricing model.
It provides several advantages over the traditional computing model, where organizations have to purchase hardware, provide physical space, and manage their own IT infrastructure.
Some major advantages of cloud computing include:
  • Scalability: Resources can be increased or decreased based on demand.
  • Speed and agility: IT resources can be deployed quickly.
  • Cost efficiency: Organizations can avoid large upfront investments in hardware.
  • Massive economies of scale: Cloud providers operate at a very large scale, which helps reduce the cost of providing services.
  • Flexibility: Resources can be accessed and used when they are needed.

Cloud Service Models

Cloud service models describe the type of resources and services provided by the cloud provider.

IaaS — Infrastructure as a Service

IaaS provides basic IT infrastructure such as virtual servers, storage, and networking. The customer is responsible for managing the operating system, applications, and data.

PaaS — Platform as a Service

PaaS provides a platform for developing, testing, and running applications. The cloud provider manages the underlying infrastructure, allowing developers to focus mainly on their applications.

SaaS — Software as a Service

SaaS provides ready-to-use software applications over the internet. The cloud provider manages the application and underlying infrastructure, while the customer simply uses the software.

Cloud Deployment Models

The main cloud deployment models are:
  1. Cloud
  2. Private (On-premises)
  3. Hybrid

AWS — Amazon Web Services

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a cloud computing platform that provides a wide range of IT resources and services over the internet.
AWS allows individuals and organizations to access resources such as computing power, storage, databases, networking, security, analytics, and machine learning without having to purchase and maintain the physical infrastructure themselves.
AWS services generally follow a pay-as-you-go pricing model, allowing customers to pay for the resources they use.

Ways of Interacting with AWS

AWS can be interacted with in three main ways:
  1. AWS Management Console
The AWS Management Console is a web-based graphical interface used to create, configure, monitor, and manage AWS resources.
  2. AWS Command Line Interface (CLI)
The AWS CLI allows users to manage AWS resources by entering commands in a terminal or command prompt.
  3. AWS Software Development Kits (SDKs)
AWS SDKs allow developers to interact with AWS services directly from their applications using programming languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript, and others.

AWS Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF)

The AWS Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF) provides guidance to help organizations successfully adopt and use AWS cloud services.
It recognizes that successful cloud adoption is not only about technology. Organizations also need to consider people, processes, governance, and business objectives.
AWS CAF organizes its guidance into six perspectives:
  1. Business Perspective
  2. People Perspective
  3. Governance Perspective
  4. Platform Perspective
  5. Security Perspective
  6. Operations Perspective
The six perspectives help an organization look at cloud adoption from different angles rather than focusing only on technology.

AWS Services

AWS provides a wide range of services to meet the different needs of its users and organizations.
Overall, AWS allows organizations to build, deploy, and manage applications and IT infrastructure in the cloud without having to purchase and maintain all the underlying physical hardware.

Conclusion

Cloud computing has changed the way organizations access and use IT resources. Instead of purchasing and maintaining physical infrastructure, organizations can use cloud services based on their needs and pay only for the resources they use.
AWS is a cloud platform, that provides services for computing, storage, databases, networking, security, analytics, and artificial intelligence. Understanding cloud service models, deployment models, AWS services, and the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework provides a strong foundation for learning how cloud technologies are used in real-world environments.
As organizations continue to adopt cloud computing, knowledge of AWS has become an important skill in modern IT and technology careers.
