Why Did My Electricity Bill Suddenly Increase? I Tried Solving It With Data Instead of Guessing.
My idea is to build a software-based Electricity Bill Analyzer. Instead of only showing the total bill, the system would analyze historical electricity usage and help answer questions such as: How much did my consumption increase? Which months had the highest usage? What appliances might be contributing most to consumption? Is my current usage unusually high compared with previous months? What changes could potentially reduce consumption?
- Where data comes in 📊
This is where you connect it to your Data Analysis interest.
Explain that the application could use information such as:
Data Example
Previous bill ₹1,200
Current bill ₹1,850
Previous units 180 kWh
Current units 290 kWh
Number of people 4
AC usage 5 hrs/day
Fan usage 8 hrs/day
Previous bill ₹1,200
Current bill ₹1,850
Previous units 180 kWh
Current units 290 kWh
Number of people 4
AC usage 5 hrs/day
Fan usage 8 hrs/day
Then the application can identify patterns.
n the future, Machine Learning could make the system more intelligent.Instead of simply comparing two bills, an ML model could learn from historical consumption and predict expected electricity usage. If the actual consumption is significantly higher than the predicted value, the system could flag it as an unusual increase.
For example:
Expected: 210 kWh
Actual: 320 kWh
Actual: 320 kWh
→ 🚨 Unusually high consumption
That's a genuine ML use case rather than adding AI just for the sake of saying "AI."
This is the part that connects the project to your new cloud interest.
You could propose an architecture like:
User → Web App → AWS → Data Storage → Analysis/ML → Result
For example:
- Amazon S3 → store uploaded bill/data files
- AWS Lambda → run processing without managing a server
- Amazon RDS/DynamoDB → store user information and historical usage
- Amazon SageMaker → potentially train/deploy the ML model later
- Amazon CloudWatch → monitor the application
Don't claim you've implemented these if you haven't. Present them as "how I could extend the project using AWS."
If you could build a system that explains one confusing monthly expense using data, what would you choose—electricity, groceries, mobile bills, or something else?
