Amazon CloudFront Explained — How AWS Delivers Content Faster
Introduces Amazon CloudFront, AWS’s Content Delivery Network (CDN). Learn how CloudFront uses edge locations, caching, origins, and distributions to deliver websites and content faster. Understand how CloudFront works with S3, HTTPS, and custom domains to build secure and high-performance web applications.
If S3 taught us how to store files and VPC taught us how to build a secure cloud network, the next question is:
How can we deliver our website and content quickly to users around the world?
This is where Amazon CloudFront comes in.
What is Amazon CloudFront?
Amazon CloudFront is AWS's Content Delivery Network (CDN) service.
A CDN delivers content from locations that are geographically closer to users. Instead of every request traveling back to your original server, CloudFront can serve cached content from its edge locations.
CloudFront can deliver:
- HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Images and videos
- APIs
- Application files
- Static website content
Why Do We Need a CDN?
Imagine your website is hosted on a server in India, but a user accesses it from the United States.
Without a CDN, the user's request may need to travel a long distance to reach the origin server.
With CloudFront, frequently requested content can be cached closer to the user.
This can help reduce latency and improve the user experience.
How CloudFront Works
CloudFront sits between your users and your origin.
An origin is the location where your original content is stored or generated.
Common origins include:
- Amazon S3
- Amazon EC2
- Application Load Balancer
- API Gateway
- Custom HTTP servers
For example, a static website could use S3 as its origin.
When a user requests an object, CloudFront checks whether the content is available in its cache.
If it is cached, CloudFront can return it directly.
If it isn't cached, CloudFront retrieves it from the origin and can cache it according to the configured caching behavior.
What is an Edge Location?
CloudFront uses a global network of edge locations.
These locations are designed to bring content closer to users.
For example, if users in different geographical regions request the same image, CloudFront can serve cached copies from appropriate edge locations instead of repeatedly retrieving the image from the origin.
This is one of the main reasons CDNs can improve content delivery performance.
CloudFront with Amazon S3
One of the most common beginner architectures is:
S3 + CloudFront
S3 stores your website files, while CloudFront delivers them to users.
For example, your S3 bucket might contain:
1
2
3
4
index.html
style.css
script.js
images/CloudFront uses that S3 bucket as its origin and distributes the content through its edge network.
For production websites, AWS recommends using Origin Access Control (OAC) so that CloudFront can access a private S3 bucket without requiring the bucket itself to be publicly accessible.
What is Caching?
Caching means temporarily storing content so it can be reused for future requests.
Suppose thousands of users request the same logo.
Instead of retrieving the logo from S3 for every request, CloudFront can serve cached copies when the cache configuration allows it.
Caching can reduce:
- Latency
- Origin requests
- Server workload
- Data transfer from the origin
The effectiveness of caching depends on your cache policy and how your application delivers content.
CloudFront and HTTPS
CloudFront supports HTTPS, allowing your website and applications to use encrypted connections.
You can use AWS Certificate Manager (ACM) to manage SSL/TLS certificates for CloudFront distributions.
This becomes especially useful when connecting a custom domain to your application.
What is a CloudFront Distribution?
A CloudFront distribution defines how CloudFront delivers your content.
When creating a distribution, you configure things such as:
- Origin
- Viewer protocol
- Cache behavior
- Allowed HTTP methods
- Custom domain
- TLS certificate
- Access controls
Think of the distribution as the configuration that tells CloudFront where your content comes from and how it should be delivered.
CloudFront vs S3
It's easy to confuse these two services.
Amazon S3 is primarily used to store objects.
Amazon CloudFront is primarily used to deliver content efficiently through a CDN.
They often work together:
S3 stores the content. CloudFront delivers the content.
A Simple Real-World Example
Imagine you build a portfolio website.
You could store:
- HTML files
- CSS files
- JavaScript
- Project screenshots
- Resume
in S3.
CloudFront can then distribute these files to users around the world.
Later, you can connect Route 53 to your custom domain and use ACM for HTTPS.
This creates a practical foundation for a production-style static website.
Final Thoughts
Amazon CloudFront is an important service to understand when building applications that need fast and reliable content delivery.
The key concepts to remember are:
CDN → Origin → Edge Locations → Caching → Distribution
