Feature Request: Native Automated Database File Export & Direct S3 Archiving in AWS RDS
Proposal for a native, engine-agnostic RDS and AWS Backup feature to enable automated database file compression and direct archiving to Amazon S3 without requiring custom Lambda functions or external scripts.
Category
AWS RDS | AWS Backup | Amazon S3Abstract / Summary
Currently, exporting application-generated files, custom report logs, or XML/JSON database dumps directly from an AWS RDS instance to Amazon S3 requires implementing external intermediate routines—such as AWS Lambda functions, custom Java application services, or dedicated EC2 cron jobs.
While AWS RDS supports native S3 integration for specific engines (e.g., PostgreSQL
aws_s3 extension or Oracle S3_INTEGRATION), there is a lack of a unified, engine-agnostic mechanism in AWS Backup or the RDS Console to configure scheduled file compression (e.g., ZIP archives) and direct streaming to S3 without writing custom pipeline code.We propose adding a native Scheduled File Export & S3 Archiving policy directly within AWS Backup or AWS RDS.
Current Pain Points & Architectural Challenges
- Operational Overhead: Developers and SysAdmins must maintain custom scripts or standalone microservices purely to handle database payload extraction, local file compression, and direct S3 upload via SDKs.
- Security & Credential Management: Custom export routines require managing IAM roles, API tokens, or database access keys across multiple deployment pipelines, increasing the surface area for security misconfigurations.
- Storage & Network Inefficiencies: Storing temporary uncompressed files before upload consumes local volume IOPS and storage bandwidth on the DB host or intermediate container.
