AWS EC2 Troubleshooting: 7 Common Problems and How to Fix Them

Amazon EC2 makes it easy to run virtual servers in the cloud. However, when an instance becomes unreachable or an application stops responding, knowing where to start troubleshooting can be challenging.
Here are 7 common EC2 problems and the basic checks I would follow.
1. Cannot Connect to the EC2 Instance
First, check whether the instance is running. Then verify the connection details, such as the correct public IP address, username, and key pair.
2. SSH Connection Fails
For Linux instances, check whether SSH is allowed on port 22 in the security group. Also verify that the network path and instance are working correctly.
3. Application or Website Is Not Accessible
Check whether the required application port, such as 80 or 443, is allowed in the security group. Then verify that the application is actually running on the instance.
4. Security Group Configuration Issue
Security groups act as virtual firewalls. Check both inbound and outbound rules and allow only the traffic that is actually required.
5. High CPU Usage
High CPU usage can affect application performance. Check CPU utilization using Amazon CloudWatch and investigate which process or application is consuming resources.
6. Disk Space Is Full
A full disk can cause applications and services to fail. Check disk usage from the operating system and remove unnecessary files or increase the storage capacity when required.
7. Instance Status Check Failed
AWS performs status checks to identify problems with the instance or underlying infrastructure. Check the EC2 console for the specific status-check failure and follow the recommended recovery steps.
