My First Steps into AWS Cloud: What I’m Learning as a Student
Exploring AWS as a computer science student, understanding cloud fundamentals, and discovering how cloud services can transform ideas into scalable real-world applications.
As a computer science student, I have always been curious about how applications that we use every day can handle thousands or even millions of users. Learning about cloud computing has helped me understand that modern applications are not limited to the resources available on a single computer or server.
My AWS journey started with learning the fundamentals of cloud computing and gradually exploring how different AWS services work together to build reliable and scalable applications.
UNDERSTANDING CLOUD COMPUTING
Before exploring AWS, I wanted to understand what cloud computing actually means.
In simple terms, cloud computing allows us to use computing resources such as servers, storage, databases, networking, and other technologies over the internet instead of managing all the physical infrastructure ourselves.
This makes it possible for developers and organizations to build applications without having to purchase and maintain large amounts of hardware.
EXPLORING AWS
AWS provides a huge ecosystem of cloud services for different requirements. As a beginner, I am particularly interested in understanding how services can work together rather than learning each service independently.
For example, a simple application could involve Amazon EC2 for computing, Amazon S3 for storing files, Amazon RDS for relational databases, AWS Lambda for running code without managing servers, and Amazon CloudWatch for monitoring applications.
Understanding these services has helped me see how a cloud architecture can be designed around the requirements of an application.
MOVING FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE
One thing I have realized while learning cloud computing is that reading about a service is very different from actually using it.
Hands-on practice makes concepts much easier to understand. Instead of only memorizing what a service does, I want to experiment with small projects, deploy applications, understand permissions, monitor resources, and learn how different AWS components communicate with each other.
My goal is to gradually move from simple experiments to more complete projects.
WHAT I FIND INTERESTING ABOUT AWS
The most interesting part of AWS for me is the ability to start small and scale when needed.
A student project can begin with a few basic services, but the same cloud concepts can eventually be used to design systems capable of supporting much larger workloads.
I am also interested in learning how cloud computing, DevOps, automation, databases, and AI are coming together to shape modern software development.
MY LEARNING GOALS
As I continue my AWS journey, I want to:
- Strengthen my cloud fundamentals.
- Gain hands-on experience with core AWS services.
- Deploy my own applications on AWS.
- Learn about security and IAM best practices.
- Understand monitoring and scalability.
- Build practical cloud-based projects.
- Eventually prepare for an AWS certification.
FINAL THOUGHTS
My AWS journey is still at the beginning, but exploring cloud computing has already changed the way I think about software development.
Instead of thinking only about “How do I write this application?”, I am beginning to think about “How can I deploy it, secure it, monitor it, and scale it?”
That shift in perspective is what makes cloud computing exciting for me.
I am looking forward to learning more, experimenting with AWS services, making mistakes, building projects, and sharing what I learn with the community.
This is just the beginning of my AWS cloud journey. 🚀☁️
