I Started Learning AWS — Here’s What I Wish I Knew Before Building on the Cloud

5 lessons I learned while moving from traditional application support and backend development toward cloud

🚀 My AWS Journey Begins: 5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Building on the Cloud
I recently started spending more time exploring AWS, and one thing became clear:
Learning cloud isn't just about memorizing AWS services. It's about understanding how everything fits together.
Coming from a software engineering and application-support background, I initially looked at AWS as a huge list of services.
EC2. S3. RDS. Lambda. VPC. IAM. CloudWatch...
It can feel overwhelming. 😅
But I'm slowly realizing that learning AWS becomes much easier when you focus on problems first and services second.
Here are 5 lessons I'm learning:
1️⃣ Don't try to learn every AWS service
Start with the fundamentals and understand why a service exists before moving to the next one.
2️⃣ Learn IAM early
Understanding users, roles, permissions and policies is essential when working with AWS.
3️⃣ Think about architecture, not just individual services
A real application is rarely just an EC2 instance. Understanding how compute, storage, databases, networking and monitoring work together is where the real learning begins.
4️⃣ Always think about cost
Building something that works is great.
Building something that works without unnecessary cloud costs is even better. 💰
5️⃣ Build instead of only watching tutorials
My biggest goal is to learn AWS through hands-on projects — break things, troubleshoot them, understand what went wrong, and build them again.
☁️ My current focus:
AWS → Java → Spring Boot → Backend Development → Databases → Cloud Architecture
I'm still at the beginning of this journey, but I'm excited to document what I learn here.
