I Stopped Copy-Pasting Terraform for a Week — Here's What Happened

Aspiring Engineer with strong interest in Cloud
For the first few weeks of learning Terraform, my workflow was basically:
Find a tutorial → copy the code → run terraform apply → if it works, move on
It felt productive. I was "building" things. I had resources in AWS. I had a state file. I was doing DevOps, right?
Then one day terraform apply broke on me, and I stared at the error for 20 minutes because I didn't know what half the arguments in my own config did.
So I tried something small: for one week, I wrote every Terraform block from scratch without looking at a tutorial. Just the AWS docs and my own understanding.
It was slower. Much slower. A security_group rule that took 30 seconds to copy-paste took me 10 minutes to figure out the right syntax for.
But by the end of the week, when terraform apply broke again, I actually read the error and fixed it in like 2 minutes.
That's the whole post. One week. No fancy setup. No new tool. Just: read the code before you run it.
I'm still not good at Terraform. But I stopped being someone who uses it and started being someone who understands it, even a little.
What was your "slow week" moment? Did you ever force yourself to stop shortcutting and just read the thing?
