My Study Routine for the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner Exam
I'm a Computer Science student, and I recently decided to earn my first AWS certification: the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02). In this post, I'll share the routine I'm following with AWS Skill Builder and a few other resources. Maybe it can help someone else who's just getting started.
Why Cloud Practitioner?
It's the foundational AWS certification. It covers core cloud concepts, the main AWS services, security, pricing, and billing. It's a good first step before more technical certifications, and it gives me a solid vocabulary to understand how cloud solutions are built.
My Routine
1. Courses on AWS Skill Builder
I started with AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials, which gives a clear overview of the four exam domains:
- Cloud Concepts
- Security and Compliance
- Cloud Technology and Services
- Billing, Pricing, and Support
I try to complete one module per study session instead of rushing through everything at once.
2. Taking Notes
After each module, I write short notes in my own words. I focus on:
- What each service does, in one sentence
- When to use it, and how it differs from similar services (for example, S3 vs. EBS vs. EFS)
- Key concepts that tend to appear on the exam, like the Shared Responsibility Model and pricing models
Rewriting concepts in my own words helps me notice what I haven't really understood yet.
3. Practice Questions
Once I finish a domain, I test myself with practice questions, including the official question set on Skill Builder. When I get a question wrong, I go back to my notes and add whatever was missing. That way, my notes keep improving over time.
4. YouTube for Extra Context
When a topic doesn't click, I look for a video explanation on YouTube. Seeing the same concept explained in a different way, sometimes with a demo in the AWS Console, usually makes it much easier to understand.
What I've Learned So Far
- Consistency beats long sessions. Short, regular study blocks work better for me than cramming.
- Practice questions are a learning tool. They're not just for the end; they show me what to review.
- Comparing services is key. Many questions ask you to pick the right service for a scenario, so understanding the differences matters more than memorizing definitions.
Next Steps
My plan is to keep this routine until I'm consistently scoring well on practice exams, and then schedule the real exam. After that, I'd like to explore a more hands-on certification.
If you're also preparing for the Cloud Practitioner exam, feel free to share your routine or tips in the comments, I would very much appreciate it! Let’s grow together!
