Lesser Known AWS Features — Day 13: AWS Systems Manager Session Manager
Day 13 of my AWS learning journey: Today I explored AWS Systems Manager Session Manager, a feature I had heard about but never really explored.
When we normally think about connecting to an EC2 instance, SSH and opening inbound ports often come to mind. What I found interesting is that Session Manager can provide secure access to an instance without needing to open inbound SSH ports.
It allows administrators to start a session with managed instances directly through AWS Systems Manager. This can be useful for troubleshooting, managing servers, and performing administrative tasks.
The part I found most interesting is the security benefit. Instead of exposing SSH access to the internet, Session Manager can help reduce the need for inbound management ports.
For me, this was a good reminder that AWS often has built-in tools that can make common infrastructure tasks both simpler and more secure.
Have you used Session Manager instead of traditional SSH access?
