Stop Treating Logs as an Afterthought

Good observability is more than collecting logs. A few structured signals can make debugging distributed AI pipelines dramatically easier.

Stop Treating Logs as an Afterthought

When an AI pipeline fails, the hardest question is often not “what failed?”
It's “where did it fail?”
A request might pass through ingestion, a queue, an inference worker, storage, and several APIs before producing an answer.
A single ERROR: failed log isn't very useful.
I prefer attaching a simple job or request ID to every stage:
1
2
3
4
5
6
Request ID: 8f31

Ingestion → completed
Queue → received
Inference → completed
Storage → failed
Now one ID lets me trace the entire journey.
This becomes especially useful with asynchronous workers. Logs, metrics, and queue depth together can tell you whether you're dealing with a bad payload, a slow worker, a growing backlog, or a downstream failure.
You don't always need a complicated observability stack.
Start by making every stage explain what it received, what it did, and what happened next.
That alone can save a surprising amount of debugging time.
