AWS IAM Explained Simply: Understanding Users and Permissions
IAM is one of the first AWS security concepts beginners come across. Here’s my simple understanding of users, permissions, and why IAM is important when learning AWS
AWS IAM Explained Simply: Understanding Users and Permissions 🔐
While learning AWS, I came across AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM).
At first, terms like users, permissions, and policies seemed a little confusing. After learning the basics, I understood that IAM is mainly about controlling who can access AWS resources and what they are allowed to do.
👤 What is IAM?
IAM helps us manage access to AWS resources.
For example, if a team is working on an AWS project, everyone may not need access to everything. IAM allows us to control what each person can access.
This helps keep AWS accounts more secure.
🔑 Users and Permissions
An IAM user can be given specific permissions depending on what they need to do.
For example:
- One person might need to work with Amazon S3.
- Another person might need access to Amazon EC2.
- Someone else might only need to view resources.
Instead of giving everyone full access, we can give them only the permissions they actually need.
🛡️ Why is IAM Important?
I learned that giving the right amount of access is an important part of cloud security.
If someone has more permissions than they need, it can create unnecessary security risks.
This is why the idea of least privilege is important. It means giving users only the access they need to perform their tasks.
💡 What I Learned
The main thing I understood is that IAM is not just about creating users.
It is about managing access securely.
As I continue learning AWS, I want to understand more about IAM policies, roles, and how permissions work in real projects.
🎯 What I Want to Learn Next
I’m planning to explore:
- IAM policies
- IAM roles
- Permissions
- Least privilege
- How IAM is used in real AWS projects
I'm still learning the basics, so I’d love to hear from the AWS community.
