Your AI Agent May Not Be the Problem
AI agents are only as production-ready as the systems they interact with. Explore the architecture, API, security, idempotency, resilience, and observability requirements for making existing applications ready for autonomous AI agents.
Your AI Agent May Not Be the Problem
We often ask:
“Is my AI agent production-ready?”
But there is another question engineers should ask:
“Are the systems my agent interacts with ready for an agent?”

Shipping APIThe agent may be intelligent and well-tested.
But what if:
- the API has no clear contract?
- authentication uses a shared credential?
- a retry can create a duplicate transaction?
- the response contains ambiguous data?
- failures cannot be traced back to the agent?
The agent isn't necessarily the failure point.
The surrounding application may not be agent-ready.
WHAT CHANGES WITH AGENTS?
A human might make 10 API calls in an hour.
An agent can make hundreds automatically.
That changes the engineering requirements.

5 QUESTIONS FOR AGENT-READY APIS
1. Can the agent understand the interface?
Clear contracts, schemas, errors, and predictable responses matter.
2. Can every action be attributed?
We should know which agent, identity, or workflow performed an action.
3. Are mutations idempotent?
If an agent retries a request, can it safely execute twice?
4. Can failures be isolated?
One faulty tool should not create a cascading failure.
5. Can we observe the interaction?
We need visibility into:

THE BIGGER IDEA
Production AI isn't only about choosing a better model.
It is about preparing the entire interaction surface.

Production AgentThe next time you build an agent, don't only test the agent.
Test the systems it controls.
Discussion
If an AI agent suddenly had access to one of your existing APIs, what would you fix first before allowing autonomous actions?
