Why This Confuses Most Beginners
"Free Tier" sounds simple, but it's actually three different types of offers bundled under one name. Not understanding the difference is the single biggest reason beginners get surprise AWS bills.
The Three Types of Free Tier
1. Always Free
Some services offer a certain amount of usage free, forever, not just for a limited time. Example: a small amount of Lambda invocations or DynamoDB storage every month, with no expiry.
2. 12 Months Free
These offers apply only to new accounts, and only for 12 months from account creation. Example: a limited amount of EC2 compute hours or S3 storage. After 12 months, normal pricing kicks in automatically.
3. Trials
Short-term free offers tied to specific services, usually a fixed number of days regardless of usage, after which billing starts even if you haven't touched the service again.
Why Beginners Get Surprise Bills
Leaving Resources Running
The most common mistake: launching an EC2 instance for a test, forgetting about it, and getting billed because it kept running past the free usage limit.
Exceeding the Free Usage Cap
Free Tier isn't unlimited. Going over the free hours, storage, or requests in a month means paying for the excess, not the whole service.
Not Setting Up Billing Alerts
Many beginners skip this step entirely, then get blindsided by a bill they had no early warning about.
How to Actually Use Free Tier Safely
1. Set up a billing alarm immediately after creating your account, before launching anything.
2. Always terminate or stop resources you're done testing with, don't just close the browser tab.
3. Check the Free Tier usage dashboard regularly instead of assuming you're within limits.
4. Read the fine print per service since each one has different free limits and durations.
The Bigger Lesson
Free Tier is genuinely useful for learning cloud computing without financial risk, but only if you treat it with the same discipline as a production environment. Assuming "it's free" without checking usage is how beginners end up paying real money for a learning mistake.
