AWS EC2: What Happens When You Launch a Virtual Server?
Launching an EC2 instance is one of the first hands-on experiences for AWS learners. This article explains the basic process and the important components involved.
Introduction
Amazon EC2 is one of the most commonly used AWS services. It allows us to create virtual servers in the cloud without purchasing or maintaining physical hardware.
When I first started working with AWS, launching an EC2 instance helped me understand how cloud infrastructure works in practice.
What is EC2?
Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) provides resizable computing capacity in AWS.
Instead of buying a physical server, we can launch an EC2 instance whenever we need computing resources.
What Do We Choose When Launching an EC2 Instance?
When creating an EC2 instance, several important choices are made.
1. AMI
An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) provides the operating system and other configuration needed to launch the instance.
For example, we can choose an Ubuntu AMI.
2. Instance Type
The instance type determines the computing resources available to the server, such as CPU and memory.
Different workloads require different instance types.
3. Key Pair
A key pair is used to securely connect to an EC2 instance.
For Linux instances, SSH is commonly used.
For example:
ssh -i my-key.pem ubuntu@<public-ip>4. Network Configuration
The EC2 instance is launched inside a VPC.
We can choose:
- VPC
- Subnet
- Public IP configuration
- Security Group
Understanding these networking options is important because they determine how the instance communicates with other resources and the internet.
5. Security Group
A Security Group works as a virtual firewall for the EC2 instance.
For example, we might allow:
- SSH - Port 22
- HTTP - Port 80
- HTTPS - Port 443
It is important to allow only the traffic that is actually required.
What Happens After Launch?
After launching the instance, AWS allocates the required infrastructure and starts the virtual server.
If the instance has a public IP and the network configuration allows it, we can connect to it remotely.
For example:
ssh -i my-key.pem ubuntu@<public-ip>Once connected, we can install software, run scripts, host applications, and perform many other tasks.
My Learning Experience
Working with EC2 helped me understand that cloud computing is not just about clicking buttons in the AWS Console.
To work effectively with EC2, we need to understand Linux, networking, SSH, security groups, IP addresses, and basic system administration.
This is one reason I believe that learning Linux and networking alongside AWS is very important.
Conclusion
EC2 is a fundamental AWS service and a great starting point for learning cloud infrastructure.
By understanding AMIs, instance types, key pairs, VPCs, subnets, public IPs, and Security Groups, we can build a strong foundation for more advanced AWS and DevOps concepts.
