What I Learned in My First Month as an AWS Builder
This article I look back at what I learned, the projects I tried, the habits that kept me consistent, and what I got wrong. If you're just starting out with AWS or AI, I hope my first month helps you plan yours.
Hi everyone! It has been about a month since I joined AWS Builder Center, and this is my fourth article. Writing one every week has been a good way to keep myself accountable, so I want to look back on what I've learned.
Where I started
I began with a big goal, becoming an AI engineer, and very little idea of where to begin. [Add a line about your starting point, for example "I knew some Python but had never used AWS."]
What I learned
- The cloud basics matter. Services like S3, IAM, and Lambda show up in almost every project, so learning them first made everything else easier.
- Generative AI is approachable. Trying Amazon Bedrock showed me that you can build something useful without training a model yourself.
- Prompts matter a lot. Clear instructions led to much better answers than vague ones.
- Security and cost habits come early. Setting a budget alert and giving only the permissions a project needs are habits I'm glad I started on day one.
What I built or tried
- [Project or exercise 1, for example "an S3 bucket for storing a small dataset"]
- [Project or exercise 2, for example "a simple chatbot using Bedrock"]
- [Anything else, for example "a course or lab I completed"]
What went wrong
[Add one honest mistake and what it taught you, such as a permissions error, a wrong region, or a day when you lost motivation.] Mistakes were some of my best lessons, and sharing them is part of why I write these posts.
Habits that kept me consistent
- A short daily session, even [10 to 15 minutes] on busy days
- Writing about what I learned each week, which showed me gaps in my understanding
- Reading and commenting on other builders' posts, which taught me things I wouldn't have found alone
My plan for month two
- [Goal 1, for example "finish AWS Cloud Practitioner preparation"]
- [Goal 2, for example "build a project that uses my own documents with Bedrock"]
- [Goal 3, for example "start learning SageMaker basics"]
Thank you
Thanks to everyone who read, liked, or commented on my earlier posts. It makes learning in public much more rewarding.
Your turn
- What was the most useful thing you learned in your first month with AWS?
- What would you add to my month-two plan?
Happy building!
