From RAG to AI Agents: Making AI Systems Take Action

Learn how AI Agents go beyond simple chatbots by planning tasks, using tools, retrieving information, and taking actions. Explore how combining RAG with AI Agents can help build smarter, more capable real-world AI applications.

From RAG to AI Agents: Making AI Systems Take Action

Introduction

In the first few days of this journey, we explored how RAG helps AI systems retrieve relevant information before generating an answer.
But what if an AI system could do more than just answer questions?
What if it could decide what to do, use tools, retrieve information, and complete tasks on its own?
That is where AI Agents come in.

What is an AI Agent?

An AI agent is a system that uses an AI model to understand a goal, decide the steps required, use available tools, and produce a result.
A simple chatbot might work like:
User → AI Model → Answer
An agent can work more like:
User → AI Model → Plan → Use Tools → Observe Results → Decide Next Step → Final Answer
For example, imagine asking:
"Find the cheapest flight and tell me the best option."
A normal chatbot may only provide general advice.
An AI agent could:
  1. Understand the request.
  2. Search flight data.
  3. Compare prices.
  4. Check timings.
  5. Select the best option.
  6. Explain its recommendation.

How Does an AI Agent Work?

A basic agent usually contains four important parts:

1. AI Model

The model understands the user's request and decides what should happen next.

2. Tools

Tools allow the agent to interact with external systems.
Examples include:
  • Search APIs
  • Databases
  • Calculators
  • Weather APIs
  • Code execution
  • Business applications

3. Memory or Context

The agent can maintain useful information from previous interactions so that it does not have to start from zero every time.

4. Reasoning and Planning

The agent determines which action should be performed and in what order.

RAG + Agents

This becomes even more powerful when we combine RAG with AI agents.
For example, consider a university assistant.
A user asks:
"What subjects do I have tomorrow and what topics should I study?"
The agent could:
Step 1: Retrieve the student's timetable.
Step 2: Retrieve the relevant syllabus.
Step 3: Search learning materials using RAG.
Step 4: Create a study plan.
Step 5: Return the final answer.
Here, RAG provides the knowledge, while the agent provides the decision-making and actions.

Why Are AI Agents Useful?

AI agents can be useful when a task requires multiple steps instead of a single question-and-answer interaction.
Some examples are:
  • Customer support automation
  • Personal productivity assistants
  • Research assistants
  • Coding assistants
  • Data analysis
  • Business workflow automation
  • Educational assistants
The important idea is that an agent isn't simply generating text.
It is using AI to accomplish a goal.
