Why Does Every AWS Service Sound Like a Pokémon?
Learning AWS is hard enough, but remembering whether it's EC2, ECS, EKS, or EFS sometimes feels like collecting Pokémon more than learning cloud computing.
When I first started learning AWS, I thought cloud computing would be the hardest part. Turns out, remembering service names was the real challenge.
One day you're learning EC2, then someone mentions ECS, EKS, EFS, and EMR. At that point, it starts feeling less like cloud computing and more like you're trying to complete a Pokémon collection.
"EC2, I choose you!"
Jokes aside, AWS service names can be intimidating for beginners because there are so many of them. The good news is that most AWS services are designed around a few core concepts: compute, storage, networking, databases, and security. Once you understand those foundations, the long list of acronyms becomes much less scary.
For example:
- Need a virtual server? Think EC2.
- Need object storage? Think S3.
- Need a managed database? Think RDS.
- Need to control access? Think IAM.
Instead of trying to memorize every AWS service, I've found it more helpful to understand the problem each service solves. The service names eventually stick through repetition.
My advice to fellow beginners: don't panic when you see a slide filled with AWS acronyms. Even experienced cloud engineers occasionally need to remind themselves whether they meant ECS, EKS, EFS, or the other three-letter service they forgot existed.
Question for the community: Which AWS service name confused you the most when you were getting started? 😄
