From Notebook to Real App: What AI Students Should Learn Beyond the Model
Building an AI model is only one part of the journey. In this article, I’m exploring what comes next — APIs, cloud services, deployment, storage, and turning an AI idea into a usable application.
From Notebook to Real App: What AI Students Should Learn Beyond the Model
As an AI & Data Science student, I spend a lot of time learning about Python, data, machine learning, and models.
But there is something I’ve started realizing:
Building the model is not the end of an AI project.
A model needs to become part of something people can actually use.
What Comes After the Model?
A practical AI application may need several components:
- Data storage to manage files and information
- Backend APIs to connect the model with an application
- Cloud computing to run the application
- Authentication to protect users and data
- Deployment to make the application accessible
- Monitoring to understand how the application performs
This is where cloud technology becomes interesting to me.
Why AWS Matters for AI
AWS provides different services that can support different parts of an application.
For example:
Amazon S3 → Storage
AWS Lambda → Serverless computing
Amazon EC2 → Compute
Amazon Bedrock → Generative AI
AWS Lambda → Serverless computing
Amazon EC2 → Compute
Amazon Bedrock → Generative AI
Instead of thinking about these as separate services, I’m beginning to think about how they can work together to build a complete application.
The Skill I Want to Develop
I don't want to learn AI only as:
Dataset → Training → Accuracy
I want to understand:
Idea → Data → AI → Backend → Cloud → Deployment → Users
That shift is important for anyone interested in becoming an AI engineer.
I’m still learning the fundamentals, but I’m trying to move gradually from writing code that works on my laptop to building applications that can actually be used.
For me, that is where AI and cloud computing start becoming much more exciting.
