Getting Started with AWS: A Beginner’s Guide to Cloud Computing

Cloud computing has become an important part of modern software development, and AWS is one of the most widely used cloud platforms. For students and beginners, learning AWS can be a great way to understand how applications are deployed, managed, and scaled in the cloud.

What is AWS?

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a cloud platform that provides services for computing, storage, databases, networking, security, machine learning, and many other workloads.
Instead of purchasing and maintaining physical servers, developers can use AWS resources when they need them and scale them according to their requirements.

Important AWS Services for Beginners

1. Amazon EC2

Amazon EC2 provides virtual servers in the cloud. It is useful for running websites, APIs, backend applications, and other workloads.

2. Amazon S3

Amazon S3 is an object storage service. It can be used to store images, videos, documents, backups, datasets, and application files.

3. AWS Lambda

AWS Lambda allows developers to run code without managing servers. It is useful for event-driven applications and serverless architectures.

4. Amazon RDS

Amazon RDS makes it easier to set up and manage relational databases in AWS. It supports several popular database engines.

5. Amazon CloudWatch

CloudWatch helps monitor AWS resources and applications. Developers can use it to view metrics, logs, and create alerts.

A Simple AWS Learning Roadmap

For beginners, I recommend learning AWS in this order:
  1. Understand basic cloud computing concepts.
  2. Learn AWS global infrastructure and Regions.
  3. Explore IAM and basic cloud security.
  4. Learn EC2 and S3.
  5. Understand VPC and networking fundamentals.
  6. Explore databases such as RDS.
  7. Learn serverless computing with Lambda.
  8. Learn monitoring with CloudWatch.
  9. Build small projects using multiple AWS services.

Build Projects While Learning

Reading documentation is useful, but building projects makes cloud concepts much easier to understand.
A beginner project could be a simple portfolio website hosted using AWS services. After that, you could build a serverless application using Lambda, API Gateway, and DynamoDB.
For AI and machine learning enthusiasts, AWS also provides services and infrastructure that can be explored for deploying and running AI/ML workloads.

Final Thoughts

AWS can seem overwhelming because it provides many services, but beginners do not need to learn everything at once. Start with the fundamentals, understand a few core services, and gradually build practical projects.
The best way to learn cloud computing is to combine theory, hands-on practice, documentation, and real projects.
