Choosing the Right AWS Service for Your Project
Learn how to choose the right AWS service by understanding your project requirements, comparing options, and considering cost, performance, and simplicity.
The AWS “Why” Problem: Learning Services Is Easy, Choosing Them Is Hard
When I started exploring AWS, I noticed something interesting.
Learning what an AWS service does is usually easier than understanding why I should choose that service.
For example:
- Amazon S3 → object storage
- AWS Lambda → serverless compute
- Amazon EC2 → virtual servers
- Amazon DynamoDB → NoSQL database
These definitions are easy to remember.
But when building a project, a different question appears:
“Which one should I actually use?”
That is where the real learning begins.
🧠 From “What?” to “Why?”
Instead of memorizing services, I think beginners can use three questions:

DECISIONThis changes the learning process from:
“I need to memorize AWS services.”
to:
“I need to understand the problem first.”
🔍 A simple example
Imagine I am building a college project where users upload images.
My first thought might be:
“I need storage.”
Now I can ask:
1️⃣ What am I storing?
Images and files.
2️⃣ Do I need a traditional server just to store them?
Not necessarily.
3️⃣ What AWS service is designed for object storage?
Amazon S3 becomes a natural option to investigate.
The important part is not simply knowing that S3 exists.
The important part is understanding why S3 fits the requirement.
