Amazon EC2: The Foundation of Cloud Computing on AWS āļø
When I started learning AWS, one of the first services I explored was Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud).
EC2 is one of the fundamental services in AWS because it allows us to create and manage virtual servers in the cloud without purchasing or maintaining physical hardware.
š¹ What is Amazon EC2?
Amazon EC2 provides resizable computing capacity in the AWS Cloud. An EC2 instance can be thought of as a virtual machine that we can use to host applications, websites, APIs, development environments, databases, and many other workloads.
Instead of purchasing a physical server, we can launch an EC2 instance within minutes and select the resources required for our application.
š¹ Key Components of an EC2 Instance
When launching an EC2 instance, several important components need to be understood:
1. AMI ā Amazon Machine Image
An AMI provides the software required to boot an EC2 instance, including the operating system and configuration information.
For example, we can choose an Amazon Linux, Ubuntu, or Windows AMI when launching an instance.
AWS also allows us to create our own custom AMIs and use them to launch additional instances with the same configuration.
2. Instance Type
The instance type determines the hardware resources available to the virtual server.
Different instance families are designed for different workloads, including:
- General-purpose workloads
- Compute-intensive applications
- Memory-intensive applications
- Storage-intensive workloads
- Accelerated computing
Choosing the right instance type is important for balancing performance and cost.
3. EBS ā Elastic Block Store
EBS provides persistent block storage for EC2 instances.
It can be used for:
- Operating system storage
- Application data
- Databases
- Logs
- Backups and snapshots
EBS volumes can also be encrypted to improve data security.
4. Security Groups š
A Security Group works like a virtual firewall for an EC2 instance.
It controls inbound and outbound network traffic.
For example:
- SSH ā Port 22
- HTTP ā Port 80
- HTTPS ā Port 443
One important security practice is to avoid exposing SSH/RDP access to the entire internet unless it is absolutely necessary.
5. Key Pairs
Key pairs are used to securely connect to EC2 instances.
For Linux instances, an SSH client can use the private key to authenticate with the server.
The private key should always be stored securely and should never be shared publicly.
š¹ A Simple EC2 Workflow
A typical EC2 deployment can look like this:
Choose Region ā Select AMI ā Select Instance Type ā Configure Network ā Configure Security Group ā Add Storage ā Launch Instance ā Connect ā Deploy Application
This simple workflow helped me understand how cloud infrastructure is built step by step.
š¹ Why EC2 is Important for DevOps
EC2 becomes especially interesting when learning DevOps and Cloud Engineering.
EC2 can be used with services and tools such as:
- AWS VPC
- IAM
- EBS
- CloudWatch
- Load Balancers
- Auto Scaling
- Docker
- Kubernetes
- Jenkins
- Terraform
- Ansible
For example, a DevOps pipeline can build an application using Jenkins, create a Docker image, and deploy the application onto infrastructure running on AWS.
š¹ Important Security Practices
While working with EC2, security should always be considered.
Some basic practices include:
ā
Use IAM roles instead of hardcoding AWS credentials.
ā
Restrict Security Group rules to only the required ports.
ā
Avoid opening SSH (port 22) to
0.0.0.0/0 in production.ā
Encrypt sensitive EBS volumes.
ā
Keep the operating system and applications updated.
ā
Monitor instances using AWS monitoring tools.
š¹ What I Learned
Working with EC2 helped me understand that cloud computing is not just about launching a virtual machine.
It involves understanding:
Compute + Networking + Storage + Security + IAM + Monitoring + Cost Optimization
This foundation is helping me build my knowledge toward AWS and DevOps engineering.
I'm continuing to learn and practice AWS services through hands-on labs and real-world scenarios.
