The Rise of AI Agents: Orchestrating Multi-Agent Workflows with Amazon Bedrock and AWS Step Functions
Move beyond simple chatbots. Learn how to design and orchestrate autonomous, multi-agent AI workflows in the cloud using Amazon Bedrock and AWS Step Functions.
Generative AI has evolved rapidly. We started with simple prompt-and-response chatbots, moved to RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) to give our models context, and are now entering the era of Agentic Workflows.
Instead of relying on a single Large Language Model (LLM) to do everything, modern applications use autonomous AI agents—specialized LLMs equipped with specific tools, personas, and tasks—that collaborate to achieve a goal.
But how do you orchestrate a team of AI agents reliably in the cloud? The answer lies in combining Amazon Bedrock Agents with the state management power of AWS Step Functions.
In this article, we’ll explore how to build a serverless, multi-agent architecture on AWS.
The Multi-Agent Concept
Imagine you are building an automated "Software Security Auditor." Asking a single LLM to read a repository, find vulnerabilities, write a patch, and review its own code usually leads to hallucinations or missed edge cases.
Instead, we can break this down into a multi-agent workflow:
- The Code Reviewer Agent: Scans the codebase for security flaws using specific search tools.
- The Developer Agent: Takes the vulnerability report and writes a patch.
- The QA Agent: Reviews the patch to ensure it fixes the bug without breaking existing functionality.
Why Step Functions?
You might be tempted to write a Python script or AWS Lambda function to chain these agents together. However, AI generation takes time, and Lambda has a 15-minute timeout. Furthermore, if the QA Agent rejects the Developer Agent's code, you need a complex retry loop.
AWS Step Functions is purpose-built for this. It provides:
- Visual Workflows: You can see exactly how your agents interact.
- Long-Running Executions: Step Functions can run for up to a year, completely eliminating timeout worries.
- Built-in Loops and Branching: Easily loop the Developer and QA agents until the code passes validation.
- Human-in-the-Loop (HITL): Pause the workflow and wait for a human manager to approve the final patch before merging.
Building the Architecture
Here is how you can implement this on AWS:
1. Define the Agents in Amazon Bedrock
Amazon Bedrock allows you to create fully managed Agents. For each of our three personas, you will create a Bedrock Agent, assign it a foundational model (like Anthropic Claude 3.5 Sonnet), and write a specific system prompt defining its role.
You can also bind AWS Lambda functions to these agents as "Action Groups," allowing the Code Reviewer Agent to actually pull code from GitHub, or the Developer Agent to open a Pull Request.
2. Orchestrate with Step Functions
Next, you create a Step Functions State Machine. You will use the AWS SDK integration within Step Functions to directly call the
InvokeAgent API for Bedrock. The workflow looks like this:
- Start: Receive the GitHub repository URL.
- Task 1 (Reviewer): Invoke the Code Reviewer Agent.
- Task 2 (Developer): Pass the Reviewer's output to the Developer Agent.
- Task 3 (QA): Pass the Developer's patch to the QA Agent.
- Choice State: Did the QA Agent approve?
- If No: Loop back to Task 2 (Developer) with the feedback.
- If Yes: Proceed to manual approval.
- Task 4 (Human Approval): Send an SNS email to the engineering manager with a link to approve or reject the patch.
- End: Open the PR or discard.
The Power of Serverless AI
By pairing Amazon Bedrock with AWS Step Functions, you get a completely serverless multi-agent system. You don't have to manage long-polling web sockets, worry about container memory limits, or write complex error-handling code. Step Functions tracks the state of your AI conversation, and Bedrock handles the intelligence.
As AI continues to tackle more complex business problems, orchestrating specialized agents will become a core skill for cloud engineers. Start experimenting with Bedrock Agents today, and see what workflows you can automate!
