What I Learned About Amazon S3 as a Beginner

Learn the basics of Amazon S3 and understand how AWS stores files and data in the cloud. This beginner-friendly article explains buckets, objects, object keys, and a simple real-world example of using S3.

As a beginner in AWS, I wanted to understand how files and data can be stored in the cloud. While exploring AWS services, I learned about Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service).
Amazon S3 is a cloud storage service that allows us to store and access data such as images, videos, documents, and application files.

What is Amazon S3?

Amazon S3 stands for Amazon Simple Storage Service.
It provides a simple way to store data in the cloud. Instead of storing files only on our computer, we can store them in an S3 bucket and access them when needed.
For example, we can use S3 to store project documents, images, videos, or backup files.

Basic Concepts of S3

1. Bucket

A bucket is a container used to store objects in Amazon S3.
For example:
My Project Bucket → Images, Documents, Videos

2. Object

An object is a file stored inside an S3 bucket.
Examples include:
  • photo.jpg
  • project.pdf
  • video.mp4

3. Object Key

An object key is used to identify an object inside a bucket.
For example:
photos/myphoto.jpg

How Does S3 Work?

The basic process is:
Create Bucket → Upload File → Store Object → Access File
First, we create an S3 bucket. Then, we upload files into the bucket. The uploaded files are stored as objects.

Real-World Example

Imagine a college website where students upload project reports.
Instead of storing all the reports directly on the website server, the reports can be stored in an S3 bucket.
Student → Uploads Report → S3 Bucket → Report Stored
This makes S3 useful for applications that need to store and manage many files.

Uses of Amazon S3

Amazon S3 can be used for:
  • Storing images and videos
  • Storing documents
  • Creating backups
  • Storing application data
  • Hosting static websites
  • Sharing and accessing files

What I Learned

While learning about Amazon S3, I understood that cloud computing is not only about running applications. It is also about storing and managing data efficiently.
The concepts of bucket, object, and object key helped me understand how files are organized in cloud storage.

Conclusion

Amazon S3 is a simple and useful AWS service for storing data in the cloud. Learning S3 helped me understand the basics of cloud storage as a beginner.
I look forward to learning more AWS services and understanding how different AWS services can work together to build real-world applications.
