What If AWS Could Investigate Incidents for You?

AWS DevOps Agent can investigate incidents using OpenSearch telemetry. But how far should we let AI go in automating production incident response?

Cloud & DevOps Engineer
What happens when an AWS alert doesn't just notify an engineer — but starts the investigation automatically?
AWS recently showed how AWS DevOps Agent can connect with Amazon OpenSearch Service to investigate incidents using the observability data that triggered the alert. Amazon Web Services, Inc.
The traditional incident workflow often looks like:
Alert → Engineer wakes up → Open dashboard → Search logs → Correlate metrics → Check deployments → Find root cause → Fix
That's a lot of manual investigation.
With an AI-assisted workflow, it could become:
Alert → AI investigates → Correlates telemetry → Finds evidence → Explains root cause → Proposes remediation
What I find most interesting isn't simply the AI investigation.
It's the possibility of creating a closed-loop incident response system.
Imagine an incident where the agent can:
🔹 Detect the anomaly
🔹 Investigate logs and traces
🔹 Correlate recent deployments
🔹 Identify the likely root cause
🔹 Explain the evidence
🔹 Create an incident ticket
🔹 Suggest the remediation
🔹 Wait for human approval before making a production change
AWS is also showing how DevOps Agent investigation events can be integrated with tools such as Jira, ServiceNow, and PagerDuty using Amazon EventBridge. Amazon Web Services, Inc.
That makes the idea more interesting because the AI doesn't have to replace the existing DevOps workflow.
It can become part of it.
But there is an important boundary:
Should an AI agent only investigate and recommend a fix, or should it eventually be trusted to automatically remediate certain production incidents?
For example, restarting an unhealthy workload might be low risk.
Changing an IAM policy or modifying production infrastructure is very different.
Maybe the future isn't fully autonomous incident response.
Maybe it's risk-aware autonomy:
Low risk → automatic action
Medium risk → approval required
High risk → human investigation
💭 Where would you draw the line for AI-powered incident remediation in production?
