Choosing the Right AWS AI Service: A Beginner’s Guide

Explore how Amazon Comprehend, Amazon Transcribe, Amazon Bedrock, and Amazon SageMaker AI solve different problems. Simple examples and memory tips make it easier to understand which service fits your needs.

Start with the problem you want to solve

AWS offers several artificial intelligence and machine learning services. For beginners, the names can be confusing because many services involve working with data.
A useful starting point is to ask: What should my application do?
Does it need to understand customer feedback, turn speech into text, generate an explanation, or use a model trained for a specific task?
Let’s look at four services through simple examples.

1. Amazon Comprehend: Find insights in text

Imagine an online shop receives hundreds of customer reviews. Reading every review manually would take time.
Amazon Comprehend uses natural language processing to analyze text. It can identify sentiment, key phrases, and entities such as people, places, or organizations.
For example, a customer writes:
“The product is excellent, but the delivery was late.”
Comprehend can help analyze the sentiment expressed in that feedback. Its sentiment categories include positive, negative, neutral, and mixed.
Memory tip: Comprehend → understand text.

2. Amazon Transcribe: Turn speech into text

Imagine a business wants written transcripts of recorded customer calls.
Amazon Transcribe converts spoken audio into text. The resulting transcript can be used for searching, reviewing conversations, or further analysis.
For example, a recorded customer call could first be processed by Transcribe. The transcript could then be analyzed using Comprehend to identify sentiment.
Memory tip: Transcribe → speech to text.

3. Amazon Bedrock: Build with generative AI

Imagine a learning application that explains difficult topics in simple language.
Amazon Bedrock provides access to foundation models for building generative AI applications. Depending on the selected model, applications can perform tasks such as generating text, summarizing documents, and answering questions.
For example, a student could ask:
“Explain cloud computing using a school library example.”
An application using an appropriate model through Bedrock could generate a beginner-friendly explanation.
Generated responses should still be checked for accuracy, especially when used for learning.
Memory tip: Bedrock → build with foundation models.

4. Amazon SageMaker AI: Build, train, and deploy models

Imagine a retailer wants to develop a machine learning model that recommends products based on customer purchase history.
Amazon SageMaker AI provides tools for building, training, and deploying machine learning models. It is useful when a team needs control over its model development and training process.
For example, the retailer could prepare historical purchase data, train a recommendation model, evaluate its performance, and deploy it to serve predictions.
Bedrock and SageMaker AI have overlapping capabilities. This comparison is a starting point: Bedrock simplifies access to foundation models, while SageMaker AI offers broader control over model development.
Memory tip: SageMaker AI → build, train, deploy.

A quick way to remember

  • Analyze written feedback: Amazon Comprehend.
  • Convert recorded speech into text: Amazon Transcribe.
  • Build a generative AI application with foundation models: Amazon Bedrock.
  • Develop and train a machine learning model: Amazon SageMaker AI.

Services can work together

Choosing a service does not always mean choosing only one.
A customer support application could use Transcribe to create a transcript and Comprehend to analyze the text. It could also use Bedrock to generate a draft summary for a person to review.
The best starting point is a clearly defined task. Once you know the input and the output you need, choosing a suitable service becomes much easier.
