WEEK 3 OF CLOUD SECURITY FOUNDATION

MY KEYTAKE AWAY FROM THIS WEEK MODULE: SECURING YOUR INFRASTRUCTURE

Key concepts
  • Three-tier web app: Presentation, application, and data tiers. Only the web layer should be public; the database stays hidden.
  • VPC: Your own isolated section of AWS where you control IP ranges, connections, and internet access.
  • Public vs. private subnets: Public subnets (web servers, load balancers) have internet routes. Private subnets (databases, backend servers) don't accept direct inbound internet traffic.
  • Security groups: Instance-level firewall. Stateful, allow rules only, deny by default.
  • Network ACLs: Subnet-level firewall. Stateless, support allow and deny rules, evaluated in numbered order.
  • Load balancers: Spread traffic across multiple servers for availability, and keep those servers private behind a public entry point.
  • Protecting compute resources: Use least privilege, limit access, patch and monitor.
Hands-on: Lab 4.1 practiced configuring security groups to secure VPC resources.
Takeaways: Design for security first, keep sensitive resources private, layer defenses (security groups + network ACLs), apply least privilege, and practice by doing.
