My AWS Cloud Journey: Module 3 - AWS Global Infrastructure

After completing Module 3, I was able to identify the difference between AWS Regions, Availability Zones, edge locations, AWS service and service categories.

Learning Cloud Computing | Problem Solver
I just completed the module 3 - AWS Global Infrastructure Overview of the AWS Cloud Foundation, and I am excited to share what I learnt from every section of the module.

Section 1 - AWS Global Infrastructure

At the beginning of this section, I learnt that the AWS Global Infrastructure is designed and built to deliver a flexible, reliable, scalable, and secure cloud computing environment with high-quality global network performance.

AWS Regions:

I learnt that an AWS Region is a geographical area for data replication and connectivity.
As of 2026, AWS has 39 operational regions across North America, South America, Europe, Asia Pacific, China, the Middle East, and Africa.
  • North America:
    • US East (N. Virginia) – us-east-1
    • US East (Ohio) – us-east-2
    • US West (N. California) – us-west-1
    • US West (Oregon) – us-west-2
    • Canada (Central) – ca-central-1
  • South America:
    • South America (São Paulo) – sa-east-1
  • Europe:
    • EU (Ireland) – eu-west-1
    • EU (London) – eu-west-2
    • EU (Paris) – eu-west-3
    • EU (Frankfurt) – eu-central-1
    • EU (Stockholm) – eu-north-1
  • Asia Pacific:
    • Asia Pacific (Tokyo) – ap-northeast-1
    • Asia Pacific (Seoul) – ap-northeast-2
    • Asia Pacific (Osaka) – ap-northeast-3
    • Asia Pacific (Mumbai) – ap-south-1
    • Asia Pacific (Singapore) – ap-southeast-1
    • Asia Pacific (Sydney) – ap-southeast-2
  • Middle East:
    • Middle East (Bahrain) – me-south-1
  • Africa:
    • Africa (Cape Town) – af-south-1
I learnt that AWS Regions consist of Availability Zones, which consist of data centers.
AWS Regions, Availability Zones, and Datacenter Hierarchy

Factors for selecting an AWS Region

  1. Data governance, legal requirements
  2. Proximity to customers (latency)
  3. Services available within the region
  4. Costs

Availability Zones:

Each availability zone is a fully isolated partition of the AWS infrastructure. An availability zone is the lowest level of specification that a customer can make. They cannot specify the datacenters to be used.

AWS Data Centers:

Data centers are where data is stored and processed in an availability zone. A data center contains multiple physical servers. Each data center has redundant power and network.

Points of Presence:

AWS provides a global network of 187 Points of Presence locations that consists of 176 locations and 11 Regional edge caches.
Amazon CloudFront is a content delivery network used to deliver contents to end-users in order to reduce latency.

AWS Infrastructure Features:

  1. Elasticity and scalability
  2. Fault-tolerance
  3. High availability

Section 2 - AWS Services and Service Categories

At the beginning of this section, I learnt that AWS offers 23 different products of service categories, and each category consists of one or more services. Some of the most commonly used service categories include:
  1. Compute
  2. Cost management
  3. Database
  4. Management and governance
  5. Networking and content delivery
  6. Security, identity, and Compliance
  7. Storage
Some of the mentioned categories are explained below:

Storage service category

  • Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3): is an object storage service that offers scalability, data availability, security and performance
  • Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS): is a high-performance block storage designed for use with Amazon EC2 for both throughput and transaction intensive workloads.
  • Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS): provides a scalable fully managed elastic network file system (NFS) for use within AWS Cloud services and on-premises resources.
  • Amazon Simple Storage Service Glacier: a secure, durable and extremely low-cost AWS S3 cloud storage class for data archiving and long-term backup.

Compute service category

  • Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2): provides resizable compute capacity as virtual machines in the cloud.
  • Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling: enables automatic addition or removal of EC2 instances according to predefined conditions
  • Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS): is a highly scalable, highly performance container orchestration service that supports Docker containers.
  • Amazon EC2 Container Registry (Amazon ECR): is a fully managed Docker container registry that makes it easy for developers to store, manage and deploy Docker container images.
  • AWS Elastic Beanstalk: is a service for deploying and scaling web applications and services on familiar servers such as Apache and Microsoft IIS.
  • AWS Lambda: enables users to run code without provisioning or managing servers.
  • Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS): makes it easy to deploy, manage and scale containerized applications that user Kubernetes on AWS.
  • AWS Fargate: is a compute engine for Amazon ECS that allows users to run containers without having to manage servers or clusters.

Database service category

  • Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS): is an easy to setup, operate and scale relational database in the cloud.
  • Amazon Aurora: is a MySQL and PostgreSQL compatible relational database. It is set up to be five-times faster than standard MySQL databases and three times faster than standard Postgre databases.
  • Amazon Redshift: enables users to run analytic queries against petabytes of data that are stored locally on Amazon.
  • Amazon DynamoDB: is a fully managed key value and document NoSQL database that delivers single-digit millisecond performance at any scale, with built-in security, backup and restore, and in-memory caching

Networking and content delivery services category

  • Amazon VPC: enables users to provision logically isolated sections of the AWS Cloud to launch AWS resources in a virtual network that they define.
  • Elastic Load Balancing: automatically distributes incoming application traffic across multiple targets, such as Amazon EC2 instances, containers, IP addresses and lambda functions.
  • Amazon CloudFront: is a fast content delivery network (CDN) that securely delivers data, videos, applications, application programming interfaces (APIs), to customers globally with low latency and high transfer speeds.
  • AWS Transit Gateway: enables customers to connect their Amazon Virtual Private Clouds and their on-premises networks to a single centrally managed gateway.
  • Amazon Route 53: is a scalable cloud domain name system web service designed to give users a scalable cloud domain name system web service designed to give them a reliable way to route end users to the internet applications.
  • AWS Direct Connect: provides a way to establish a dedicated private network connection from data centers or offices to AWS.
  • AWS VPN: provides a secure private tunnel for networks or device to the AWS global network.
