My First AWS Project: Hosting a Static Website with Amazon S3

In this article, I share my first AWS project: hosting a simple static website using Amazon S3. I explain what I learned about S3 buckets, objects, website hosting, permissions, and the basic steps involved in deploying a website on AWS. This is a beginner-friendly introduction for students who are starting their AWS journey.

My First AWS Project: Hosting a Static Website with Amazon S3

Introduction

As a beginner learning AWS, I wanted to build something simple
that would help me understand how cloud services work.
My first project was a simple static website hosted using Amazon S3.

What is Amazon S3?

Amazon S3 is an object storage service that can be used to store
and retrieve files such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, and other
objects.

My Project

For this project, I created a simple website containing:
  • HTML
  • CSS
  • Images
I uploaded these files to an S3 bucket and configured the bucket
for website hosting.

What I Learned

Through this project, I learned about:
  1. S3 buckets
  2. Objects
  3. Uploading files to S3
  4. Access permissions
  5. Static website hosting
  6. The importance of securing AWS resources

What Was Difficult?

The most interesting part for me was understanding permissions.
AWS gives us a lot of control over who can access resources.
Understanding permissions is therefore an important part of
learning AWS.

What I Want to Learn Next

After learning S3, I want to explore:
  • IAM
  • Amazon EC2
  • Amazon CloudFront
  • AWS Lambda
  • Amazon DynamoDB

Conclusion

This small project helped me understand AWS more practically
instead of only reading about cloud concepts.
My next goal is to build a larger application by combining
multiple AWS services.
