In the Age of AI, Are Certifications Still Meaningful?
Seeing Them as a Roadmap for Learning
Hi everyone,
I’d like to share some thoughts I’ve had recently as someone who has worked as a DevOps Engineer.
Over the years I’ve picked up several AWS certifications along the way — SAA, SAP, DOP (DevOps Engineer - Professional), SCS, and recently AIF. At first, the certification itself was the goal. After a few, my perspective changed.
In the past, certifications were a clear differentiator. They were the fastest way to prove your baseline and effort. With AI becoming part of our daily workflow, things feel different.
If I don’t know something, I ask AI before I check the official docs. I get an answer quickly, but I don’t always understand why it should be that way. I’ve also seen companies value certifications less than they used to.
Of course, they are still useful for public sector roles and partner requirements. But the meaning has definitely shifted.
So I changed how I look at them:
A certification is not for the sake of qualification, but a roadmap for learning.
For me, SAA is the most important one — the minimum roadmap if you want to use AWS properly. SAA connects the core: VPC, EC2, S3, IAM, RDS, ELB. SAP, DOP, SCS are all extensions built on top of that foundation.
What changed after going through that roadmap? After brushing up on the fundamentals through exam prep, I have more to ask before I delegate to AI, and I can use AI much more valuably.
Even if AI generates a RAG pipeline with Bedrock or an entire architecture, you can’t review it if you don’t know what chunking is, why a vector database is needed, why a NAT Gateway is required, or why an IAM policy is overly permissive. Whether you delegate to AI or not, knowing is what matters. The responsibility is still on the person who knows.
That’s why I still study for certifications. And the best place for that roadmap is AWS Skill Builder. It’s official, so it’s the most optimized for learning AWS, and there is a huge amount of free content available — 500+ free digital courses across 30+ solutions, 600+ free courses with learning plans and exam prep, and now 900+ free courses. You can follow the official path of official learning -> hands-on -> certification without relying on third-party materials, from SAA to AIF.
In an era where AI gives us the answers, I believe what matters more is knowing what question to ask. And that ability comes from going through the roadmap at least once.
How are you using certifications as a roadmap in the AI era? I’d love to hear how you’re using SAA as a base and expanding from there, especially if you’ve used Skill Builder for it.
