Why AWS Observability Is More Than Just Monitoring

Observability helps teams understand not just when something fails, but why it fails. Explore how logs, metrics and traces work together to make cloud applications easier to troubleshoot and improve.

Cloud applications can generate huge amounts of data, but simply collecting it isn't enough.
Observability helps engineers understand what is happening inside an application using three key signals:
  • Metrics show what is happening.
  • Logs provide detailed events and context.
  • Traces show how a request moves across different services.
Together, they can make troubleshooting much faster.
For example, a sudden increase in response time might look like a simple performance issue. Tracing can help identify which service is actually causing the delay.
As cloud architectures become more distributed, observability is becoming an important skill for developers and cloud engineers.
What do you find most useful when troubleshooting: logs, metrics or traces?
