Cloud Foundation Bootcamp: Module 3 Recap
Ever wondered how AWS keeps your app running no matter where in the world? AWS Global Infrastructure covers that .
Regions & Availability Zones
An AWS Region is a geographical area made up of two or more Availability Zones (AZs). Each AZ, in turn, consists of one or more physical data centers.
Data in one region is not automatically replicated to another region, If you want your data available across regions, that's a decision you make AWS gives you the tools, but the replication is on you, because AWS involves fault tolerance and data stability for users. And this are terms tha stood out to me.
Data Centers
The exact location of a data center isn't disclosed to customers. AWS decides which data center handles your data based on factors like capacity and quality.
Points of Presence (PoPs)
AWS operates points of presence in major cities across dozens of countries. These exist purely to get content closer to users and decreases.
Amazon CloudFront
CloudFront is AWS's content delivery network (CDN) — it distributes content to end users through the nearest edge location, reducing the distance data has to travel.
Amazon Route 53
Route 53 is AWS's DNS service. It routes user requests to the nearest or best-performing location, helping lower latency across the board.
The Core AWS Service Categories
Module 3 also mapped out how AWS organizes its services:
- Compute — e.g. Amazon EC2
- Storage — e.g. Amazon S3
- Database — managed database services
- Networking & Content Delivery — e.g. Amazon VPC
- Security, Identity & Compliance — e.g. Amazon Cognito
- Cost Management — tools for tracking spend and setting budgets
- Management & Governance — oversight and control across your AWS environment
The Takeaway
AWS is engineered for fault tolerance, low latency, and scale. Understanding how regions, AZs, and edge locations work together is the foundation for designing anything resilient on AWS.
