Building a Resilient Multi-Region Serverless Architecture on AWS

Learn how to design and deploy a highly available, multi-region serverless application using Amazon Route 53, AWS Lambda, and DynamoDB Global Tables to eliminate single points of failure.

Building fault-tolerant applications requires planning for regional outages and performance degradation. By combining AWS serverless primitives across multiple regions, you can achieve automatic failover and low-latency access for global users.
Architecture Overview
Our active-passive architecture relies on three core components:
Amazon Route 53 DNS Failover: Health checks continuously monitor primary endpoints and automatically reroute traffic during downtime.
AWS Lambda: Regional, statelessly deployed functions execute backend business logic.
Amazon DynamoDB Global Tables: Multi-region, active-active replication ensures data consistency with single-digit millisecond latency.

Key Deployment Steps
  1. Enable DynamoDB Global Tables
Create your primary table in your main region and add a replica region under the Global Tables tab. AWS handles multi-master replication automatically.
  2. Configure Stateless Lambda Functions
Ensure Lambda functions do not store session state locally. Rely on DynamoDB or AWS Secrets Manager for shared, synchronized state across regions.
  3. Setup Route 53 Latency & Failover Routing
Define primary and secondary DNS records linked to Route 53 health checks evaluating your API Gateway health endpoints (/health).
Best Practices & Lessons Learned
Implement Circuit Breakers: Prevent cascading failures by configuring client-side retries with exponential backoff and jitter.
Automate Schema Migrations: Deploy DynamoDB schema changes via Infrastructure as Code (AWS CDK or Terraform) in a synchronized CI/CD pipeline.
Monitor Cross-Region Latency: Set CloudWatch Alarms for ReplicationLatency metrics on DynamoDB Global Tables.
