Building a Bulletproof AWS Foundation: Account Setup, IAM Security, and Cost Controls

A practical guide to configuring a secure, production-ready AWS environment from scratch. Learn how to isolate root credentials, configure least-privilege IAM policies, and establish multi-layered budget alerts to avoid unexpected cloud spend.

The three-pillar baseline required for every production or developer AWS account.
  1. Lock Down the Root User
The email and password used to create the account belong to the Root User, which has unrestricted access to all resources and billing controls.
Enable MFA: Navigate to Security Credentials and link a virtual authenticator app or hardware security key immediately.
No Access Keys: Never create programmatic API access keys for the root account.
Store and Exit: Save the credentials in a secure password vault. Do not use root for daily development or administration.
  1. Implement Least-Privilege IAM Access
Avoid long-lived admin credentials on your local machine.
IAM Identity Center: Configure AWS IAM Identity Center (Single Sign-On) to handle console logins and administrative duties.
Short-Lived Credentials: Use temporary session credentials via the AWS CLI (aws configure sso) instead of hardcoding static access_key_id and secret_access_key pairs into local code or config files.
  1. Establish Cost Guards on Day One
Free Tier limits can be exceeded quickly if resources are left running unattended.
Free Tier Usage Alerts: Under Billing Preferences, turn on usage notifications to get alerted when reaching 80% of any Free Tier threshold.
Zero Spend Budget: In AWS Budgets, set a monthly threshold (e.g., $5.00) with automatic email notifications if your actual or forecasted spend crosses it.
Region Hygiene: Stick to a single primary AWS region to avoid leaving orphaned compute, storage, or IP addresses running in unfamiliar regions.
