Building a Zero-Server REST API with AWS Lambda and DynamoDB
Client requests hit API Gateway, which proxies the payload directly to an AWS Lambda function. The Lambda function executes the application logic and interacts with DynamoDB using an SDK like Boto3 for Python or the AWS SDK for JavaScript.
Step 1: Provisioning the DynamoDB Table
Create an Amazon DynamoDB table named
ItemsTable with a partition key of type String named itemId. Set the billing mode to On-Demand to allow automatic scaling without pre-allocating Read and Write Capacity Units, ensuring costs scale dynamically with actual read and write operations.Step 2: Writing the Lambda Handler Logic
Write a lightweight function in Python or Node.js to perform CRUD operations based on the incoming HTTP method and path parameters.
Step 3: Configuring Amazon API Gateway
Create an HTTP API or REST API inside the Amazon API Gateway console and configure a proxy integration that forwards incoming requests directly to your Lambda function. Enable CORS if your API will be consumed by front-end applications hosted on separate domains, and deploy the API to a designated stage (such as
prod or dev) to generate the root invocation endpoint.Step 4: Testing and Production Considerations
Test the endpoint using tools like cURL or Postman by issuing
POST requests to create items and GET requests to retrieve data. Monitor execution duration, latency, and error rates through integrated Amazon CloudWatch logs. For lower latencies during high-traffic spikes, configure Lambda Provisioned Concurrency or evaluate SnapStart options. [1 ]Enjoyed reading this content? Let the author know!
