Starting My AWS Cloud Journey: What I Learned About Cloud Computing

In this article, I share what I learned as a beginner discovering AWS and cloud computing. I explain the fundamentals of cloud computing, why AWS is useful, and the services I am starting to explore, including EC2, S3, VPC and IAM. I also share my learning goals and how I plan to build practical cloud skills through hands-on projects.

Starting My AWS Cloud Journey: What I Learned About Cloud Computing

I recently started learning about AWS and cloud computing, and I wanted to share some of the concepts I discovered as a beginner.

What is cloud computing?

Cloud computing allows us to use computing resources such as servers, storage, databases and networking through the Internet instead of managing all the physical infrastructure ourselves.
One of the things I find interesting is that cloud computing changes the way we think about infrastructure. Instead of buying and maintaining physical servers, we can provision resources when we need them.

Why AWS?

AWS provides many cloud services that cover different infrastructure needs, including compute, storage, networking, databases and security.
As someone interested in systems and networking, I am particularly interested in understanding how services such as Amazon EC2, Amazon VPC, Amazon S3 and IAM work together.

What I want to learn

My goal is to progressively build practical AWS skills rather than only learning theory.
I want to understand how to:
  • Deploy and manage cloud servers
  • Design networks using Amazon VPC
  • Secure resources with IAM and security groups
  • Store and manage data with Amazon S3
  • Monitor cloud infrastructure
  • Build small projects using AWS services

My next step

My next article will focus on AWS IAM and the difference between users, groups, roles and policies.
I am excited to continue this journey and document what I learn along the way.
