My Plan to Earn My First AWS Certification as a Student
How I'm approaching AWS Cloud Practitioner certification prep as a student, using free Skill Builder resources, hands-on labs, and a structured study plan, before sitting the actual exam.
Why I'm Starting Here
As a B.Tech CSE student building full-stack and AI automation projects, I wanted cloud fundamentals to stop being a gap in my skill set. AWS Cloud Practitioner felt like the right starting point, broad enough to build real foundational knowledge, recognized enough to matter on a resume.
Why Cloud Practitioner First
It's tempting to jump straight to something more advanced, but I made a deliberate call to start foundational. Core concepts like compute, storage, networking, databases, and security needed to be solid before chasing a harder, specialized certification.
How I'm Structuring My Prep
Using Free Skill Builder Courses
Instead of jumping into paid resources immediately, I started with AWS's own free exam prep course covering cloud foundations, structured learning beats scattered YouTube tutorials for this kind of exam.
Hands-On Labs Over Passive Reading
Reading about EC2 or S3 only goes so far. Working inside actual AWS Builder Labs, even simple ones, made concepts stick in a way theory alone didn't.
Practice Exams as a Checkpoint, Not a Starting Point
I'm treating practice exams as a way to find gaps after studying, not as the primary study method itself.
What's Been Surprisingly Useful
- Gamified learning (like Cloud Quest) made repetitive concepts less boring.
- Builder Labs forced me to actually troubleshoot, not just follow instructions blindly.
- Having a free certification voucher as a concrete goal kept me consistent, rather than studying "eventually."
What's Next
Once I feel confident across all exam domains, I'll sit the actual Cloud Practitioner exam and share how the real test compared to the prep material, and what I'd focus on differently for the next certification after this one.
