From Wishlist to "Tech Radar": Rethinking Tech Watch & Learning
As a developer and data engineering apprentice, my tech "wishlist" was a mess. I replaced it with a "Tech Radar" (Adopt, Trial, Assess, Hold) to visually prioritize my learning across AWS, Python, and Data tools.
From Wishlist to "Tech Radar": Rethinking Tech Watch & Learning
As a developer and data engineering apprentice, I've long faced the same issue as many of us: an endlessly growing "to-learn" list. Between new AWS services, data tools, and development standards, my traditional "Wishlist" had become a graveyard of unopened bookmarks.
To fix this, I decided to ditch the flat list for a much more visual and strategic model: the Tech Radar.
Instead of piling up concepts, I now map them across four concentric rings, from daily mastery to active monitoring. Here is what my current radar looks like:
1. Adopt
The center of the target. These are the languages and tools I use daily to build solid foundations.
- My stack: Python (for backend logic and data processing) and SQL (for relational modeling).
2. Trial
Technologies I am actively implementing in my projects to validate their real-world value.
- My stack: The AWS ecosystem (for cloud hosting and architecture) and Power BI (for data visualization).
3. Assess
This is where my "Wishlist" truly belongs. These are the concepts I am currently studying and actively monitoring.
- My stack: Healthcare interoperability workflows (HL7 standards) and EAI engines (like Jeebop).
4. Hold
A crucial ring for mental bandwidth: tools I've tested but put on pause for now to focus on the essentials.
- My stack: C and Java.
Why adopt this model?
Switching to the Radar gives me immediate visual prioritization. I know at a glance where to focus my hands-on learning (Trial) and what is purely theoretical exploration (Assess). It is a great way to structure your growth, especially when navigating the intersection of software development and data engineering.
What does your tech radar look like today? Do you have a different method for managing your tech watch and AWS certifications?
