Building Serverless RAG Applications with Amazon Bedrock

A practical guide to implementing Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) using fully managed AWS services, eliminating the need to manage infrastructure while delivering context-aware AI.

Hello Builders, it is great to be back for this new article where I will write about a pattern that is commonly used in modern enterprise AI applications. As always, I will be happy to answer all the questions, so like, follow for more.
Sometimes we need our Large Language Models (LLMs) to answer questions based on our own private, proprietary data rather than just their public training data.
Maybe it is:
  • internal company wikis and documentation
  • financial reports stored in PDF format
  • historical customer support transcripts
  • or any other private resource
A common solution is to undergo the complex and expensive process of fine-tuning an existing foundation model.
But there is another option.
We can use Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) combined with Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases.
The nice part is that the AWS services acting as our AI backend do not need you to:
  • provision or manage vector databases manually
  • write custom text-chunking and embedding scripts
  • build complex orchestration logic to tie it all together

How does it work?

The important idea is that the LLM does not generate answers purely from its pre-trained memory. Instead, the system retrieves relevant facts on the fly.
  1. Storage: You upload your raw documents (PDFs, text, Word files) directly into an Amazon S3 bucket.
  2. Ingestion: Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases automatically chunks your documents, converts them into mathematical embeddings, and stores them in a fully managed vector store (such as Amazon OpenSearch Serverless).
  3. Retrieval: When a user asks a question, the application searches the vector database for the most relevant text chunks.
  4. Generation: The retrieved context is securely passed alongside the prompt to a foundation model (like Anthropic Claude on Bedrock) to generate an accurate, hallucination-free response.
This creates a highly resilient, serverless AI architecture where you only pay for the storage and compute you consume.
