How MQTT Works in IoT: The Simple Way I Understood It
My beginner-friendly understanding of MQTT, why it is commonly used in IoT, and how devices can communicate using topics and messages.
Introduction
While exploring AWS IoT, I came across a term called MQTT. I had seen it in IoT projects before, but I wanted to understand how it actually works.
As a beginner in cloud and IoT, I found MQTT interesting because it provides a simple way for devices to communicate and exchange data.
What is MQTT?
MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport) is a lightweight messaging protocol commonly used in IoT.
It allows devices to send and receive messages over a network without needing a complicated communication system.
For example, an ESP32 can collect temperature data and send it using MQTT.
How Does MQTT Work?
MQTT mainly works with three parts:
Publisher → MQTT Broker → Subscriber
The Publisher sends a message.
The Broker receives the message and manages the communication.
The Subscriber receives the messages it is interested in.
For example, an ESP32 can publish sensor data, while another application can subscribe to that data.
What are MQTT Topics?
MQTT uses topics to organize messages.
For example:
farm/device01/temperatureA device can publish data to this topic, and another device or application can subscribe to the same topic to receive the data.
This makes it easier to manage data from different devices.
MQTT and AWS IoT Core
One of the things I found interesting is that AWS IoT Core supports MQTT communication.
This means an IoT device can use MQTT to send data to AWS IoT Core, where the data can then be processed or connected with other AWS services.
A simple flow is:
ESP32 → MQTT → AWS IoT Core → AWS Services
What I Learned
Learning MQTT helped me understand how IoT devices communicate with each other and with cloud platforms.
I also understood the basic idea of publishers, subscribers, brokers, and topics, which are important concepts when working with IoT communication.
What's Next?
My next step is to try MQTT practically with an ESP32 and understand how real sensor data can be published and received.
I also want to explore how MQTT communication works when connecting an IoT device with AWS IoT Core.
Conclusion
Learning MQTT gave me a better understanding of how IoT devices communicate. It is a small concept, but an important part of building connected IoT systems, and I’m looking forward to exploring it through practical projects.
