Quiz Arena AI: Building a Secure, Real-Time Multi-Agent Learning Platform on AWS

Introduction

What if learning could feel less like an examination and more like an interactive competition supported by intelligent AI tutors?
That question inspired Quiz Arena AI, a real-time, AI-powered multiplayer quiz platform designed to transform traditional assessments into engaging, interactive, and personalized learning experiences.
Built using the AWS Strands Agents SDK and Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, the platform brings together five specialized AI agents that collaborate to support quiz generation, real-time commentary, personalized tutoring, contextual hints, and syllabus management.
The goal is simple: augment educators, encourage active learning, and make assessments more engaging without removing human control.

1. Building a Multi-Agent AI Ecosystem

Instead of relying on a single general-purpose AI assistant, Quiz Arena AI uses five specialized agents, each responsible for a particular educational task.
  • Commentator Agent: Provides dynamic, real-time commentary based on multiplayer game events, creating an engaging quiz atmosphere.
  • Tutor Agent (Professor Q): Explains answers and provides personalized learning support using contextual memory.
  • Syllabus Agent: Helps educators process syllabuses and prepare quizzes, with an approval workflow before proposed content is used.
  • Hint Master Agent: Delivers contextual hints to help students approach challenging questions without immediately revealing the answers.
  • Quiz Generator Agent: Generates structured quizzes from educational material, reducing the manual effort involved in assessment preparation.
These agents are developed using the AWS Strands Agents SDK and integrated with Amazon Bedrock models.
The architecture separates responsibilities across agents while allowing the application to coordinate their outputs through a centralized backend.

2. AWS Architecture and Technology Stack

The platform combines AI services, backend orchestration, real-time communication, and cloud infrastructure.
Core AWS technologies
  • Amazon Bedrock: Provides access to foundation models for AI-powered reasoning, content generation, and tutoring.
  • Amazon Bedrock AgentCore: Provides the runtime environment for deploying and operating the agent services.
  • AgentCore Memory: Supports contextual memory for personalized tutoring experiences.
  • Amazon S3: Stores syllabus documents and generated quiz data.
  • AWS IAM: Supports access control through permissions and role-based security.
  • Docker: Packages the application services for consistent deployment.
Application technologies
  • React 18, Vite, and Tailwind CSS for the frontend.
  • Node.js 20, Express, and Socket.IO for backend APIs and real-time multiplayer communication.
  • Python and FastAPI for the Strands agent microservice.
  • GitHub Actions for automated testing and continuous integration.
The system uses a gateway-based architecture. The Node.js gateway handles public-facing traffic, while the Python-based AI service runs behind an internal network boundary.
This separation helps maintain clear service responsibilities and reduces direct exposure of the AI infrastructure.

3. Real-Time Multiplayer and Secure Communication

Real-time interaction is a central part of Quiz Arena AI.
The Node.js gateway manages multiplayer rooms, player connections, reconnection tokens, and live score synchronization using Socket.IO.
A key architectural decision is to keep the AgentCore Python service on port 8001 inaccessible from the public internet. All external application requests pass through the gateway.
Communication between the gateway and the Strands service is protected using an internal authentication mechanism based on the X-Internal-Token header.
Unauthenticated internal requests are rejected with HTTP 401.
The gateway also implements anti-cheat measures. During active question countdowns, it removes the correctIndex field from outgoing socket payloads to prevent clients from inspecting the correct answer through browser developer tools.
These mechanisms contribute to a more controlled and secure multiplayer environment.

4. Accessible and Interactive Frontend Design

A competitive learning platform should be accessible to students with different interaction needs.
Quiz Arena AI uses a distinctive visual design built around geometric answer pads, combining colors with recognizable shapes.
  • Royal Amethyst Hexagon: 8.2:1 contrast ratio.
  • Electric Cerulean Diamond: 7.8:1 contrast ratio.
  • Terracotta Sienna Star: 7.1:1 contrast ratio.
  • Deep Emerald Square: 7.6:1 contrast ratio.
These visual indicators provide more than decoration. Shape-based differentiation helps users identify answer options without depending entirely on color.
The interface also includes:
  • Dual keyboard shortcuts using 1–4 and A–D.
  • Tactile feedback animations.
  • ARIA assertive live regions for screen-reader announcements.
  • A responsive interface built with React and Tailwind CSS.
The design aims to support accessible interaction while maintaining the energy of a competitive quiz environment.

5. Privacy-Aware Document Processing

Educators need an efficient way to convert learning materials into interactive quizzes.
Quiz Arena AI supports in-browser PDF extraction using pdfjs-dist.
Rather than uploading original PDF documents for server-side extraction, the browser processes the documents and sends extracted, sanitized text to the backend.
This approach reduces the need to retain original documents on the server and helps limit unnecessary exposure of educational materials.
However, client-side extraction alone does not establish full regulatory compliance. FERPA and COPPA obligations depend on additional factors, including data handling, consent, access controls, retention, and the educational context in which the platform is deployed.
Privacy is therefore treated as an architectural consideration rather than simply a feature.

6. Human-in-the-Loop AI

Automation should not eliminate educator oversight.
The Syllabus Agent includes a workflow in which proposed syllabus-derived content can be reviewed through an administrative dashboard before approval.
This helps keep educators involved in decisions about learning materials and assessment content.
The Tutor Agent also focuses on explanations rather than simply delivering answers. This supports a more active learning process in which students can understand the reasoning behind a correct response.
Together, these capabilities reflect a human-centered approach to educational AI: use automation to reduce repetitive work while keeping important educational decisions under human control.

7. Verification, Testing, and CI/CD

Reliability is essential when multiple services, AI models, and real-time interactions must work together.
Quiz Arena AI is supported by 36 automated tests across its frontend, gateway, and AI service layers.
Frontend and unit tests — 21
These cover PDF.js extraction, hardest-question analytics, score calculations, and CWE-1236 CSV injection sanitization.
Gateway integration tests — 6
These verify host reconnection tokens, anti-cheat masking, and health probe contracts.
Strands and Bedrock tests — 9
These validate model binding, tool-calling schemas, and question compiler outputs.
The project also uses multi-job GitHub Actions workflows to build, test, and lint all three application layers whenever code is pushed.
This testing strategy helps catch integration issues early and provides a repeatable verification process as the platform evolves.

8. Impact and Future Possibilities

Quiz Arena AI explores how multi-agent systems can support more engaging educational experiences.
Its potential contributions include:
  • Reducing repetitive workloads: Automating parts of quiz preparation and educational content processing.
  • Encouraging active learning: Using interactive multiplayer sessions to make assessments more engaging.
  • Providing personalized support: Giving students contextual hints and explanations when they need help.
  • Supporting educator oversight: Keeping teachers involved in content approval and learning decisions.
  • Improving accessibility: Combining keyboard interaction, screen-reader support, and visual differentiation.
The platform also provides opportunities for future development, including expanded analytics, additional accessibility testing, improved personalization, and further optimization of real-time AI interactions.

Conclusion

Quiz Arena AI brings together the AWS Strands Agents SDK, Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, and modern web technologies to explore a new approach to interactive education.
By combining specialized AI agents with real-time multiplayer capabilities, privacy-aware document processing, accessibility-focused design, and human-in-the-loop workflows, the project demonstrates how AI can become a collaborative learning companion rather than a replacement for educators.
For us, the real value of educational AI is not just generating questions or automating tasks. It is creating learning experiences that are more interactive, supportive, accessible, and meaningful.
Build intelligent systems. Keep humans in control. Make learning an experience worth sharing.
